Product Description
Dot Knots is one of my favorite pattern stitches! It is a simple-to-work faux bauble that adds such wonderful texture to spice up otherwise simple garments. I have used it in both baby and kit sweaters and now I have designed a simple, everyday cardigan! I wanted something that I could wear with skirts or jeans, so it has a traditional fit and length.
Dot Knots Cardigan by VERSACIKNITS
What is Being Made
The Dot Knots Cardigan is an adult knit cardigan designed by VERSACIKNITS, available in seven sizes ranging from XS to 3X. This downloadable PDF pattern provides comprehensive instructions for creating a sophisticated button-front cardigan with finished chest measurements from 32¼" to 56¼" depending on size selection. The cardigan features a classic construction with positive ease of approximately 2"/5cm when buttoned, making it suitable for layering and everyday wear.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs seamless construction methods, with the body worked in one piece from hem to underarm before being divided for the fronts and back. The pattern utilizes circular needles for flat knitting, which is a common technique for managing larger garment pieces and maintaining consistent stitch tension. The cardigan is completed with button bands and nine 3/8"/12mm buttons for closure, requiring basic finishing skills such as button placement and weaving in ends.
Stitches Used
The pattern is worked primarily in stockinette stitch, as indicated by the gauge specification of 19 stitches and 28 rows over 4"/10cm. While the PDF excerpt does not detail specialty stitch patterns, the "dot knots" designation in the design name suggests textural or decorative elements integrated into the stockinette base, though specific stitch definitions would be found in the complete pattern document.
Materials Required
- Yarn: Viola MCN Worsted weight yarn in the designer's specified colorway (shown in "Sweet Dreams"). This yarn contains 80% Superwash Merino wool, 10% Cashmere goat, and 10% Nylon, providing durability and softness. Each skein yields 200 yards/183 meters and weighs 115g. Total yardage needed ranges from 975 to 1700 yards depending on size, requiring between 5 and 9 skeins of yarn.
- Needles: US size 6 (4mm) and US size 7 (4.5mm) circular needles measuring 32"/80cm, with the smaller needle used for ribbing or edging and the larger needle for the main body to achieve proper gauge.
- Notions: Nine buttons measuring 3/8"/12mm for the cardigan front closure.
Yarn Weight and Gauge
This pattern calls for DK/Worsted weight yarn, specifically the Viola MCN Worsted blend. The working gauge is 19 stitches and 28 rows over 4"/10cm on the larger needle (US 7/4.5mm). Achieving accurate gauge is essential for proper fit, particularly given the range of finished measurements across size categories.
