Product Description
Donau Wrap is a light wrap 82 inches (208 cm) in length by 21 inches (53cm) at the widest point. Donau is Danube in German, and I named it this because the Noro colorway reminded me of the river I saw in both Germany and Serbia. Both sides of the wrap come to a point, so that it is not completely rectangular in shape. Although I have provided a gauge above, gauge is not really that important for this project. The edging is a long repeat over several stitches, and each point ends with picots. Donau wrap is a nice accessory for evening or daytime and can be worn from spring through the fall. The pattern pdf includes up-close photos of the edging and the body stitches.
Stitches used: Chain, single crochet, half-double crochet, double crochet, triple crochet, slip stitch.
Donau Wrap by Julie Blagojevich
Project Overview
The Donau Wrap is an intermediate-level crocheted shawl designed by Julie Blagojevich. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a generous rectangular wrap measuring 82 inches long by 21 inches wide, making it an ideal accessory for layering and warmth. The finished piece showcases elegant cluster-based construction with decorative picot edging details.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern calls for Noro Taiyo Sock Yarn in color 25A, requiring 4 skeins with a total yardage of 420 meters. The yarn is a premium blend of cotton, wool, nylon, and silk, combining natural fibers for breathability and durability with synthetic reinforcement for longevity. This yarn weight falls within the 3-ply to 4-ply range, providing a lightweight yet structured fabric ideal for wraps and shawls.
The pattern requires a size E (3.5mm) crochet hook and a darning needle for finishing and weaving in ends.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Donau Wrap employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The primary construction method uses cluster stitches, which form the structural foundation of the wrap. A cluster is defined as a group of stitches—specifically (single crochet, chain 2, single crochet)—that creates a compact, textured unit.
The pattern incorporates the following crochet stitches:
- Chain (Ch): Used for the foundation and spacing between clusters
- Single Crochet (Sc): The primary stitch within each cluster unit
- Half-Double Crochet (Hdc): Available in the stitch abbreviations for potential variations
- Double Crochet (Dc): Included in the pattern's stitch library
- Triple/Treble Crochet (Tr): Available for advanced stitch options
- Slip Stitch (Sl st): Used for joining rounds and finishing
- Picot: A decorative edging technique created by chaining 3 stitches and working a single crochet into the third chain from the hook, adding delicate embellishment to the wrap's borders
Construction Method
The wrap is constructed using a row-by-row building technique that begins with a minimal foundation. The pattern starts with a chain 2 foundation, and the first row establishes a single cluster. Subsequent rows involve strategic increases and cluster placement, with the crafter skipping stitches and working clusters into chain spaces to create the expanding rectangular shape.
The gauge for this project is 6 clusters and 7 rows of clusters measuring 2 inches square, providing a reference point for tension and finished dimensions. This moderate gauge produces a fabric with good drape suitable for wrap-style garments.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Donau Wrap requires familiarity with basic crochet stitches and the ability to follow row-by-row instructions with increases and stitch placement variations. Crafters should be comfortable reading abbreviations and understanding cluster construction before beginning this project.
