Product Description
This cowl is part of a set, with a matching hat, designed for dog lovers everywhere. Knit one for yourself or a friend or family member. With a matching or coordinating hat (I like the idea of reversing the colors on the 2 projects) you’ll be set to go during the cooler months when walking the dog can be a bit of an adventure. If you’d prefer an even larger cowl, using a heavier weight yarn might be just the trick. Anyway you might decide to knit this, make sure you wear it with the pride of an owner who would do just about anything to make your dog smile … . . or bark or wag or jump up on the couch.
Note: This is a checklist pattern; each row is written out for ease of execution. The colorwork sections are done in charts (shown on the last page.)

What is Being Made
The Dogwords Cowl is a knitted neck warmer designed for dog lovers, featuring a finished circumference of 26 inches and a height of 9 inches. This cowl is part of a coordinating set that includes a matching hat, allowing knitters to create complementary pieces for cooler weather. The design celebrates the bond between dog owners and their pets, making it an ideal project for personal use or as a gift for fellow dog enthusiasts.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project is worked in the round using circular needles, which is the standard construction method for cowls. The pattern employs colorwork techniques to create the dog-themed design elements. Knitters can customize their finished piece by reversing colors between the cowl and matching hat for a coordinated yet distinct look. The pattern also offers flexibility in yarn weight selection—using a heavier weight yarn than the recommended DK weight will produce a larger cowl, allowing crafters to adjust the finished size to their preferences.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern is Colorwork Stockinette Stitch, which combines the smooth, classic appearance of stockinette stitch with multiple colors to form the decorative pattern. This stitch creates a fabric with a flat, refined finish on the right side, ideal for displaying the colorwork design clearly.
Materials and Gauge
This pattern calls for DK weight yarn, offering a lightweight option suitable for layering under jackets and coats during dog walks and outdoor activities. The recommended needle size is US 6 (4.0mm) circular needles measuring 24 inches (60 cm), or a size adjusted to match the specified gauge. The pattern gauge is 22 stitches and 28 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) in Colorwork Stockinette Stitch, which translates to 5.5 stitches and 7 rounds per 1 inch (2.5 cm). Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished measurements of 26 inches in circumference and 9 inches in height.
