Product Description
This is the pattern for a dog potholder.
There is also a video tutorial for the pattern available on my YouTube channel.
I’ve used 8 ply wool and a 2.5mm crochet hook but you can use different sizes depending on what you’re most comfortable with.
Brown for the dog’s head (darker brown wool for the ears if desired), pink for the tongue, white and black cotton or wool, I used 8 ply wool which is light worsted in the US and double knitting in the UK. (Don’t use synthetic wool as it would melt).
A crochet hook, I used a 2.5mm hook.
Scissors.
Thread to sew together.
Sewing needle.
Darning needle to weave in ends.
Grey embroidery cotton to sew on the dots.
Darker pink cotton or wool for the tongue marking if desired.
Dog Potholder Crochet Pattern by Kerri's Crochet
Project Overview
This downloadable crochet pattern provides instructions for creating a charming dog-shaped potholder suitable for kitchen use. Designed by Kerri's Crochet, this project combines functional home décor with playful animal design, making it an ideal handmade gift or personal craft project.
What Is Being Made
The Dog Potholder is a decorative and functional kitchen accessory featuring a cute dog face design. The finished piece serves as a protective potholder while adding a whimsical touch to any kitchen. The potholder includes detailed features such as a dog's head, ears, tongue, and facial details to create an engaging finished product.
Crochet Techniques Used
This intermediate-level project employs fundamental crochet construction methods including working from a magic loop base, which creates a tight center point ideal for circular designs. The pattern uses standard crochet shaping techniques to form the three-dimensional dog head structure. Sewn assembly brings separate components together, and embroidery details add finishing touches to enhance the dog's facial expression.
Stitches and Abbreviations
The pattern utilizes a variety of crochet stitches to build texture and structure:
- Chain stitch (ch) – foundational stitch used for starting rows and creating openings
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
- Double crochet (dc) – a versatile mid-height stitch for building fabric
- Half treble crochet (htr) – provides height between double and treble stitches
- Treble crochet (tr) – taller stitch used in the initial magic loop foundation
- Double treble crochet (dtr) – the tallest stitch in this pattern for specific shaping
Materials Required
This project calls for DK weight yarn (also known as 8 ply wool, light worsted in US terminology, or double knitting in UK terminology). The pattern specifies natural fiber yarns rather than synthetic alternatives, as synthetic materials would melt from heat exposure when used as a functional potholder.
Yarn colors needed:
- Brown yarn for the dog's head (with optional darker brown wool for the ears)
- Pink yarn for the tongue
- White yarn for facial highlights
- Black yarn for eyes and details
Additional supplies include:
- A 2.5mm crochet hook (as used by the designer)
- Scissors for cutting yarn
- Thread for sewing components together
- Sewing needle for assembly
- Darning needle for weaving in loose ends
- Grey embroidery cotton for sewing decorative dots
- Darker pink cotton or wool for optional tongue markings
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes crocheters have foundational knowledge of basic stitches and can follow written instructions with abbreviations. The magic loop technique and multi-stitch variety require some experience, though the pattern is described as easy to follow with clear guidance throughout.
