Product Description
The pattern contains one basic head shape with 8 different colour-work treatments and this combined with 7 different styles of ear, also options for the colour patch design of the body, arms and legs and a few different tail options, gives you a lot of options to make different breeds of dogs.
Included are instructions to make 2 dresses, one with a stranded colour-work design and the other knitted in a single colour with a textured design. The socks, socks and panties are knitted as part of the dog and are not removable.
All pieces of the dog are knitted flat with worsted weight yarn on 3mm or with 4ply yarn and 2.5mm needles (for the shoes, socks and panties) and all pieces are seamed afterwards.
Dog in a Dress by Julie Williams
Project Overview
This is an intermediate-level knitted toy pattern designed by Julie Williams featuring a charming dog figure dressed in a coordinating outfit. The finished toy measures approximately 23cm (9 inches) from the tip of the toes to the top of the ears, making it an ideal size for a decorative toy or gift.
What is Being Made
The pattern creates a complete knitted dog character with a removable or integrated dress and shoes. The design combines a main dog body with coordinating garments, allowing for creative color combinations and personalization through yarn selection.
Yarn Materials and Specifications
The pattern uses multiple yarn weights to achieve different textures and effects:
- Dog Body: Cascade 220 heathers yarn in worsted weight (approximately 70m/76yds for a single-color dog). The example shown uses 8010 'Natural' (Yarn A) and 9695 'Praline' (Yarn B)
- Dress and Shoes: Krea Deluxe Organic Cotton in 4ply/fingering weight, using colors 23 (Yarn C), 02 (Yarn D), and 26 (Yarn E)
- Facial Features: Scraps of black 4ply or DK weight yarn for eyes and facial details
- Shoe Embellishments: Scraps of colored yarn for decorative shoe buttons
Knitting Needles and Tools
The pattern requires a set of three different needle sizes to accommodate the various yarn weights used throughout the project:
- 3mm (US 2.5) needles for the dog body
- 2.75mm (US 2) needles for transitional sections
- 2.5mm (US 1.5) needles for the finer dress and shoe details
- Tapestry needle for seaming and finishing
Stitches and Techniques
As an intermediate knitting project, this pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for toy construction. The multi-part construction requires knitting individual pieces for the dog's body, limbs, head, dress components, and shoes, which are then assembled using tapestry needle seaming. The use of different yarn weights and needle sizes creates visual distinction between the dog's body and its clothing.
Additional Materials and Notions
- Toy stuffing for filling the knitted pieces
- Tapestry needle for seaming and embroidery work
- Black yarn scraps for embroidered or applied eyes and facial features
- Colored yarn scraps for shoe button details
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic garter and stockinette stitch. The complexity comes from managing multiple yarn weights, executing proper toy assembly, and adding embellished details rather than from advanced stitch techniques.
Design Inspiration
The pattern showcases the versatility of toy knitting by combining a main figure with coordinating accessories. The use of organic cotton for the dress and shoes provides a natural fiber contrast to the wool dog body, creating both visual and textural interest in the finished toy.
