What is Being Made

The Dog & Bone Cowl is a fun and whimsical neck accessory designed as a tribute to the designer's dog, Frank. This cowl features charming depictions of dogs and bones interspersed with a simple checkered pattern, making it an ideal gift for dog lovers. The finished cowl measures 61.5 cm in circumference, providing a comfortable fit for winter wear during outdoor activities with four-legged companions.

Craft and Construction Method

This project is created using the knitting craft, worked entirely in the round using circular needles. The cowl is constructed as a seamless tube, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a professional, polished finish. The in-the-round construction makes this an efficient and satisfying project for knitters of all levels.

Techniques Used

The Dog & Bone Cowl employs stranded colourwork, also known as fair isle patterning, to create the decorative motifs. This two-colour technique involves carrying yarn colors across the back of the work to create the pattern on the front. The pattern notes indicate that determining which colour should be your dominant colour is beneficial, as the dominant colour takes the lower path at the back of the work and provides better tension and appearance in fair isle patterns.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (k) - the fundamental stitch used throughout the project
  • Purl (p) - used as needed in the pattern construction
  • Knit through back of loop (tbl) - creates twisted stitches for textural variation

The pattern utilizes charted instructions, with Chart A providing the visual representation of the dog, bone, and checkered motifs that knitters follow to create the stranded colourwork design.

Yarn and Materials

The Dog & Bone Cowl is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a lightweight yet durable yarn suitable for creating defined stitch definition in colourwork patterns. The project requires circular needles appropriate for the chosen yarn weight to accommodate the in-the-round construction. This pattern is excellent for stash busting, allowing knitters to mix and match different colours from their yarn collection to create unique personalized versions of the cowl.

Difficulty Level and Project Characteristics

Rated as a beginner difficulty project, the Dog & Bone Cowl is accessible to knitters new to stranded colourwork techniques. Despite its beginner classification, the project offers an excellent introduction to fair isle patterning in a quick-to-complete format. The manageable scope makes it ideal for gift-giving and provides a satisfying project that can be completed relatively quickly, perfect for creating multiple versions in different colour combinations.
