Colourfast and fade resistant DMC threads keep stitches looking vibrant for generations to come. Emily June is a self-taught embroidery artist who began embroidering in 2016 when she was battling a severe anxiety disorder. She found embroidery to be calming, rewarding, and the perfect outlet for her creativity. With a background in Illustration and Design, Emily opened her shop with the desire to introduce others to the magical world of embroidery and to open the conversation surrounding mental health. Her work is inspired by nature, fantasy, and her love of people.

DMC x Emily June "Loved" Embroidery Pattern (PAT1933) – Free Downloadable PDF

The DMC x Emily June "Loved" pattern (PAT1933) is a free downloadable embroidery PDF created through a collaboration between DMC and designer Emily June. This is an intermediate-level embroidery project that results in a decorative hand-embroidered design centered around the theme of love — making it a beautiful piece for framing, gifting, or incorporating into textile projects such as cushions, tote bags, or hoop art.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a finished hand embroidery design in the style characteristic of the Emily June aesthetic — typically featuring expressive lettering, floral motifs, or illustrative elements with a warm, personal feel. The finished piece is intended to be displayed as decorative embroidery, stitched onto fabric and presented in a hoop or framed as wall art. The word or theme "Loved" is central to the design, making it a meaningful and heartfelt project.

Techniques Used

As an intermediate embroidery pattern, this design requires a working knowledge of core hand embroidery techniques. Stitchers should be comfortable with:

  • Following a colour guide and technical chart — the PDF includes both a full colour diagram and a detailed technical chart to guide placement and stitch selection across the design
  • Working with multiple thread colours — the colour guide references a range of DMC thread shades, identified by codes such as A9, B1, B2, B3, C4, C6, C7, D2, D3, D5, D8, E9, F1, G6, G7, and H3, among others
  • Combining different stitch types across a single composition to create texture, depth, and dimension
  • Reading embroidery diagrams to accurately transfer and execute the design onto fabric

Stitches Used

While the PDF's stitch list is referenced within the technical chart, intermediate embroidery designs of this nature from DMC and Emily June typically incorporate a combination of classic hand embroidery stitches. Based on the complexity indicated, stitchers can expect to work with techniques such as:

  • Satin stitch — for filling solid areas of colour smoothly
  • Backstitch or stem stitch — for outlines, lettering, and fine detail lines
  • French knots — for textural accents and decorative details
  • Split stitch — commonly used for outlines and text in illustrated embroidery designs
  • Lazy daisy stitch — often featured in floral or botanical embroidery compositions

The technical chart within the PDF specifies exactly which stitches correspond to each section of the design, ensuring accuracy throughout the project.

Materials Required

This pattern is designed to be worked using DMC embroidery threads (stranded cotton floss), with the colour guide referencing a broad palette of DMC shades across the design. As is standard for hand embroidery projects of this type, you will also need:

  • DMC stranded cotton embroidery floss — in the specific colour codes listed in the colour guide within the PDF
  • Embroidery fabric — such as evenweave, linen, or cotton fabric suitable for hand embroidery
  • Embroidery hoop — to keep the fabric taut and even while stitching
  • Embroidery needles — standard hand embroidery needles appropriate for stranded cotton thread
  • Scissors — small, sharp embroidery scissors for precise thread cutting
