DMC Sunset Valley – PAT1399 – Free 3D Punch Needle Embroidery Pattern

DMC Sunset Valley (PAT1399) is a free downloadable PDF pattern from the DMC Library, designed for crafters who want to explore the tactile, dimensional world of punch needle embroidery. The finished design measures 13 cm × 13 cm and depicts a scenic sunset valley motif rendered in rich, warm tones. This is an intermediate-level project that combines multiple DMC thread types to achieve both smooth and textured surface effects, making it an excellent step forward for embroiderers already comfortable with basic needlework.

What Is Being Made

The project produces a small, decorative 3D embroidery panel featuring a sunset valley landscape. The design uses punch needle technique to create areas of contrasting texture — some sections worked on the front of the fabric for a smooth, flat finish, and others worked on the reverse of the fabric for a raised, looped, textured pile. This interplay of smooth and textured surfaces gives the finished piece its distinctive three-dimensional character and visual depth.

Techniques Used

  • Punch needle embroidery – the primary technique throughout the design, using a punch needle tool to push loops of thread through an open-weave fabric from either the front or the back
  • Smooth surface stitching – worked on the front of the fabric (code letter A in the pattern chart), producing a flat, even finish ideal for background areas and fine detail
  • Textured surface stitching – worked on the reverse of the fabric (code letter B in the pattern chart), creating raised loops that stand proud of the fabric surface for a plush, dimensional effect

Tools Required

  • DMC Punch Needle Regular 10 – the specified punch needle tool, sized to suit the range of threads used in this project
  • Aida fabric, 6 ct / 2.4 pts per cm – the recommended ground fabric, whose open weave allows the punch needle to pass through cleanly and consistently

Materials – Threads and Yarn

One of the most distinctive features of Sunset Valley is its use of four different DMC thread and yarn types within a single small design, blending wool, cotton, and mixed-fibre yarns to achieve varied textures and colour effects.

  • DMC Wooly – a fine 100% merino wool yarn used for colours 07, 45, 92, and 01; Wooly's soft, matte finish works beautifully in punch needle, producing dense, velvety loops
  • DMC Wooly 5 – a slightly chunkier merino wool used for colour 31; the increased weight adds extra loft and texture to specific areas of the design
  • DMC Natura – a fine 100% cotton thread used for colour 81; Natura's smooth, lustrous surface creates a contrast against the matte wool sections
  • DMC Natura XL – a thicker cotton yarn used for colours 61 and 72; its greater bulk contributes to the raised, textured areas of the composition
  • DMC Tapestry Wool – a traditional 4-ply wool used for colours 7194, 7326, 7598, and 7594; tapestry wool is a classic punch needle material known for its durability and rich, saturated colour

Colour Palette and Design Layout

The pattern includes both a colour guide and a technical chart across its four pages. The colour guide maps each of the twelve colour references — labelled across sections A1 through B12 — to their respective thread codes, skein quantities, and thread types. Notably, some areas call for two colours used together (for example, B2 & 6 and B3 & 6), a technique that blends threads in the needle to create subtle, mixed-tone
