Product Description

It’s warm, and sunny out, and sunglasses seem to be a permanent fixture on many of our faces, especially at the beach! But when you aren’t wearing them, don’t just throw them in your bag, slide them into a handmade sunglass pouch! The pouch is finished with a snap button, but an alternative to this would be to leave off the flap, crochet a chain loop instead, and sewing on a respective sized button. Use your favorite worsted weight cotton yarn - I used Lily Sugar n Cream for mine, but WeCrochet Dishie and Bernat Handicrafter are great alternatives. I recommend cotton because of the added durability, which you'll want since this bag will see a lot of wear in, out and around a bag.

Dip-Dyed Sunglass Pouch by Alexandra EyeLoveKnots

Project Overview

This downloadable crochet pattern creates a practical and stylish sunglass pouch featuring a distinctive dip-dyed color effect. The pouch is designed as a beginner-friendly project that showcases decorative ribbed texture throughout, making it an ideal introduction to working with specialized crochet techniques while producing a functional accessory.

What Is Being Made

A small protective pouch sized to hold sunglasses, featuring a flap closure secured with a snap button. The pouch combines both aesthetic appeal through its dip-dyed colorway and practical functionality with a secure fastening system.

Crochet Techniques Used

  • Back Loop Only Single Crochet: The defining technique of this pattern, where single crochet stitches are worked exclusively into the back loop of each stitch. This creates a pronounced ribbed texture across the entire pouch, adding visual interest and dimension to the finished piece.
  • Chain Stitches: Used for foundational chains and structural elements throughout the pattern.
  • Single Crochet: The primary stitch worked in the back loop only technique to build the pouch structure.

Stitches Used

The pattern relies on fundamental crochet stitches, making it accessible for beginners. Single crochet worked into the back loop only serves as the main stitch, creating the ribbed effect that defines the pouch's appearance. Chain stitches provide the foundation and structural support.

Materials and Yarn

Yarn Requirements: Approximately 50 yards of worsted weight cotton yarn. The designer used Lily Sugar n Cream in the Ecru and Sunshine colorways to achieve the dip-dyed effect.

Yarn Alternatives: Bernat Handicrafter and WeCrochet yarns are suitable substitutions for worsted weight cotton.

Tools and Notions:

  • H8/5mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends
  • Sewing needle and thread (Silamide thread recommended)
  • Size 2 snap button (0.5 inches or 1.27 centimeters)
  • Optional jewelry pliers for snap button application

Closure Options

The pattern features a snap button closure as the primary fastening method. An alternative finishing option is available for crafters who prefer a different approach: omit the flap entirely, crochet a chain loop instead, and sew on a button of appropriate size to create a button-and-loop closure.

Difficulty Level

Rated as a beginner project, this pouch is suitable for crocheters new to the craft or those looking to practice fundamental techniques. The straightforward stitch work and minimal shaping make it an excellent project for building confidence with the back loop only technique.
