Product Description

Dìleas means faithful or loyal in Scottish Gaelic and features a wide diagonal stripe mirrored on each foot. The pattern is stunning with speckled yarns and also works beautifully with semi-solid yarns. Knit from the toe up with a gusset and heel flap, these socks are the perfect mix of relaxing knit and engaging pattern. With three widths and flexible length fitting, these are a great pattern for everyone.

Dìleas is the fourth pattern in my Socks in Love collection with Mànran, Gràdh and Togair also being available now. One more pattern (Gaol) will be added during the summer.

The pattern is fully written and charted so however you like to read your patterns, you’re covered! The pattern has been tech edited and test knitted. There’s a screenshot of the pattern, and a list of the stitches used at the bottom of the photos. You will also need to know how to do Judy’s Magic Cast-On and a stretchy bind off like Jeny’s Suprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off.

Dìleas Socks by Liz Corke

What is Being Made

Dìleas socks are a pair of knitted socks featuring a striking wide diagonal stripe pattern that is mirrored on each foot. The name Dìleas means faithful or loyal in Scottish Gaelic, reflecting the timeless appeal of this design. These socks are available in three finished sizes: Small (17.5 cm / 7" circumference), Medium (20 cm / 8" circumference), and Large (22.5 cm / 9" circumference). The socks are designed to be worn with up to 0 to 2.5 cm (0 to 1") of negative ease for a secure, comfortable fit.

Knitting Techniques

Dìleas socks are constructed using the toe-up method, which allows knitters to try on the socks as they progress and adjust the length to their preference. The pattern incorporates a traditional gusset and heel flap construction, providing structure and durability in high-wear areas. The design works beautifully with both speckled yarns and semi-solid yarns, offering versatility in yarn selection. The pattern includes German Short Rows techniques for shaping, as referenced in the abbreviations section.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking stitch – the primary stitch used throughout the sock construction
  • Knit stitches – fundamental to the overall fabric
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog) – used for decreasing
  • Double stitch (ds) – employed in German Short Rows shaping technique

Materials and Tools

The socks require 400 meters (436 yards) of 4-ply sock yarn. The pattern is designed and tested using Vicki Brown Designs Sock yarn in the colorway Fluttershy, which is composed of 75% Merino and 25% Nylon with 465 yards per 100 grams. This blend provides elasticity and durability ideal for sock knitting.

Knitting needles should be 2.5 mm (US 1.5) and may be either circular needles measuring 80 cm (32") or longer, or double-pointed needles (DPNs). Additional materials include 2 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and optional sock blockers for finishing and shaping.

Gauge

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 32 stitches and 44 rows over 10 cm (4") in stocking stitch in the round. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished sock circumference and ensuring a comfortable fit.

Difficulty Level

Dìleas is rated as an intermediate-level knitting pattern, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic sock construction. The combination of toe-up construction, gusset shaping, heel flap techniques, and German Short Rows requires solid foundational skills and familiarity with sock anatomy.
