Product Description
This pattern is worked mainly in sc. It includes intarsia crochet on the bonnet and side windows, but includes a full photo tutorial for those unfamiliar with this technique. Any yarn may be used, as long as all colours are of a similar weight and the hook is selected to give a firm fabric. Using DK yarn and a 3mm hook, my finished digger measured approx 25 cm long. For the digger shown I used:
Yellow: 45g, 100m Charcoal: 45g, 130m Grey: 54g, 97m Silver: 15g, 65m Metallic: 5g, 12m
It requires stuffing, foam rubber is preferred to keep the shaping correct.
Digger Crochet Pattern by Jan McKinnon
What is Being Made
The Digger is an amigurumi-style crocheted toy designed by Jan McKinnon for Toota Toys. This is a three-dimensional construction project that creates a realistic digger excavator vehicle. The finished toy measures approximately 28 centimeters in length and 19 centimeters in height, making it a substantial handmade plaything or decorative piece suitable for children or collectors.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level crochet project uses fundamental amigurumi techniques to build a dimensional toy. The pattern involves creating individual crocheted components that are then assembled together to form the complete digger structure. The construction method allows for customization based on yarn weight and hook size selection, with finished dimensions varying according to these choices.
Stitches and Crochet Methods
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the project employs standard crochet stitching techniques typical of amigurumi toy construction. The pattern is designed to work with various yarn weights, indicating the use of adaptable stitch patterns that maintain structural integrity across different yarn specifications.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Digger pattern is worked in DK weight yarn using a 3.0 millimeter crochet hook. The designer recommends selecting yarn colors based on suitability for creating windows, with particular emphasis on using a silvery-sheen yarn for the windows to achieve the most realistic appearance. Ice Yarn's Silver Shine is specifically mentioned as the designer's preferred choice for window details, though similar alternatives in comparable weights are suitable. Multiple yarn colors are required to complete the various components of the digger vehicle.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, indicating it is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills and some experience with amigurumi or toy construction projects.
