Product Description
I am obsessed with simple, yet beautiful lacework at the moment. And what’s the best way to make lace even simpler? Why, working it in the round of course! This means the knitting simply flies with rounds of knit stitches between rounds of eyelets. Throw in a little seed stitch for texture and you’ve got almost all my favorite elements. I say almost, because to really be perfect this cowl needed that signature twist of curiosity: What if split the cowl into two halves--lace and stockinette? What if I used the lace diamond’s natural diagonal line to do it? Diamonds and Gold is the result of those questions. It blew me away and I can’t stop wearing it!
Diamonds & Gold Cowl by Megan Gonzalez
What Is Being Made
Diamonds & Gold is a knitted cowl designed by Megan Gonzalez, available in two sizes to suit different preferences. The smaller size features a circumference of 25 inches (63.5 cm), while the larger size measures 50 inches (127 cm). Both versions share a consistent height of 9.5 inches (24 cm), making this cowl versatile for layering or wearing as a generous neck warmer. This downloadable PDF pattern is ideal for knitters seeking an intermediate-level project that combines elegant stitch work with practical wearability.
Techniques Used
This cowl is worked in the round using circular needles, a fundamental technique for creating seamless, tubular garments. The pattern employs stockinette stitch as the primary fabric base, which provides a smooth, refined surface that showcases stitch definition beautifully. Lace and texture are introduced through strategic use of yarn overs and decreases, creating the diamond motif that gives this design its distinctive character and visual interest. The combination of these techniques requires intermediate knitting skills, as managing yarn overs and their corresponding decreases demands attention to stitch counts and pattern repeat accuracy.
Stitches Used
The Diamonds & Gold cowl utilizes a focused selection of essential knitting stitches to create its patterned design:
- Knit (k) – the foundational stitch that forms stockinette fabric
- Purl (p) – used selectively to add texture and definition
- Yarn over (yo) – creates the eyelet holes that form the diamond pattern
- Skpo (slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over) – a left-leaning decrease used to balance yarn overs
- Sk2po (slip, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over) – a centered double decrease for shaping
- K2tog (knit 2 together) – a right-leaning decrease for stitch reduction
These stitches work in concert to form the diamond lace pattern while maintaining the structural integrity of the cowl.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Diamonds & Gold cowl requires DK weight yarn, with yardage needs of 230 yards (210 meters) for the smaller size and 460 yards (420 meters) for the larger size. The designer recommends selecting a yarn with 3 or more plies for optimal stitch definition, as the patterned nature of this design benefits from yarn that holds its shape and showcases individual stitches clearly. The suggested yarn is Fyberspates Vivacious DK, a 100% Merino Wool option available in 252-yard (230-meter) skeins weighing 4.1 ounces (116 grams). For the smaller cowl, one skein in the colorway 804 Sunshine is sufficient; the larger size requires two skeins. Knitters should work with US 7 (4.50 mm) circular needles in either 24-inch or 40-inch lengths, depending on the size being made. Additional materials include two stitch markers and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge and Fit
Achieving the correct gauge is essential for this pattern's success. The specified gauge is 20.5 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Knitters should swatch before beginning to ensure their tension matches the pattern requirements, as gauge variations will directly affect the finished circumference and drape of the cowl. Proper gauge ensures that the diamond lace pattern displays at the intended scale and that the cowl achieves its designed fit.
