Diamond Drops Sweater by ViTalina Craft

What Is Being Made

The Diamond Drops Sweater is a knitted pullover garment designed by independent designer ViTalina Craft. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a fitted sweater available in six sizes ranging from XS to 2XL, with finished chest measurements from 82 cm (32¼") to 133 cm (52⅜") and length to shoulder ranging from 51 cm (20") to 59 cm (23¼").

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its design. The sweater is constructed using stockinette stitch as the primary fabric base, which creates a smooth, classic knit surface. The pattern incorporates two-yarn construction, where knitters hold two different yarn weights together simultaneously to create the final fabric. This technique allows for interesting textural and visual effects while managing yarn weight and drape. The pattern includes circular needle knitting for seamless construction, utilizing both straight needles and circular needles in the project. Stitch markers are employed throughout to help track pattern repeats and shaping increases or decreases. Finishing techniques include tapestry needle or crochet hook work for weaving in ends and seaming if necessary.

Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations

The Diamond Drops Sweater uses fundamental knitting stitches notated with standard abbreviations:

  • K (knit stitch) – the basic knit stitch, worked in various quantities as indicated by numbers following the abbreviation
  • P (purl stitch) – the reverse of the knit stitch, creating texture and pattern variation
  • K2tog (knit two together) – a right-leaning decrease stitch used for shaping and creating the diamond pattern elements
  • Sst (selvedge stitch) – edge stitches that create clean, finished edges on the sides of knitted pieces

The pattern also references stockinette stitch, which is the foundation fabric created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Diamond Drops Sweater requires a unique two-yarn combination that creates the finished fabric through simultaneous knitting:

  • Yarn #1: ITO Serishin – a sport-weight or 5-ply yarn available in 50 g skeins with 317 yards (240 meters) per skein
  • Yarn #2: ITO Sensai – a lace-weight or 2-ply yarn available in 25 g skeins with 262 yards (250 meters) per skein

Total yarn requirements range from 914 meters (1000 yards) for the XS size to 1581 meters (1730 yards) for the 2XL size. When both yarns are held together, the combined gauge is 26 stitches and 30 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch.

Needles required include US 4 (3.5 mm) straight needles for the main fabric construction and a US 3 (3.25 mm) circular needle measuring 60 cm for ribbed edgings and seamless sections. Additional tools include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and a tapestry needle or crochet hook for finishing.

Yarn Weight Classification

This pattern demonstrates an advanced yarn pairing technique by combining two distinctly different yarn weights. The sport-weight ITO Serishin provides body and structure, while the delicate lace-weight ITO Sensai adds a refined, ethereal quality to the finished fabric. This combination creates a sophisticated drape and visual interest characteristic of the Diamond Drops design aesthetic.
