Product Description

This started off as a nice monkey toy but then I got to thinking about halloween and well....zombie monkey was born/created/mutatified

The head and body are worked in one piece which is the reason it is the only piece not worked in the round...the spiralling made the head too complicated.

I've included charts and written instructions and found that using both makes the pattern nice and simple

Derek, who has been unfortunately zombified, has a pull out eyeball and detachable brain...poor Derek.

I used Sirdar Summer StripesDK for Delilah, which was lovely to use and needed a 2.5mm hook. She came out 21cm from bottom to head.

Derek was made using the cheapest acrylic DK yarn which needed 3.5mm hook. Not so nice to work - squeaky ew! but the result was ok. He came out 24cm from bottom to head.

Delilah Monkey and Derek Monkey (Zombie) Crochet Pattern

What is Being Made

This downloadable crochet pattern by Sarah Lyons creates two amigurumi-style stuffed toy monkeys, each approximately 20cm tall from bottom to top of head. The pattern allows crafters to make both a standard monkey design and a zombie variation, making it a versatile project for creating cute or spooky plush toys suitable for gifts or personal collection.

Crochet Techniques Used

The pattern employs fundamental amigurumi construction techniques, with all parts worked in the round to create three-dimensional toy pieces. This approach requires consistent use of stitch markers to track the beginning of each round, which is noted as essential for successful completion. The modular construction method involves creating separate body parts that are later assembled together, a standard approach for crochet toy making that allows for easier shaping and stuffing of individual components.

Stitches and Construction Methods

While specific stitch abbreviations are referenced in the pattern notes section, the project utilizes basic crochet stitches commonly found in amigurumi patterns. The round-based construction creates seamless, organic shapes ideal for toy making. Crafters will need to be comfortable with increasing and decreasing stitches to form the characteristic rounded shapes of monkey body parts including the head, body, limbs, hands, and feet.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Approximately 100 grams of DK weight yarn in main colour (mc), plus oddment quantities of contrasting colour (cc) for face, hands, and feet details. Additional yarn needed if incorporating stripe variations into the design.
  • Hook: 3.5mm or 4mm crochet hook matched to the DK weight yarn for proper gauge and fabric consistency.
  • Stitch Markers: Position markers such as hair grips, kirby grips, or bobby pins to track round beginnings throughout construction.
  • Eyes: A pair of 9mm safety eyes or embroidery thread as an alternative for hand-embroidered eye details.
  • Stuffing: Soft toy stuffing for filling the body parts, combined with a tangerine-sized quantity of poly pellets secured in a pop sock or stocking to add weight and prevent pellets from escaping through crochet holes.
  • Needles: A large tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and assembling pieces, plus a sharp needle for embroidering mouth and nose details.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle multi-part amigurumi projects. The round-based construction and need for consistent stitch markers require attention to detail, while the modular assembly process builds confidence in toy construction techniques.

Pattern Format and Use

Provided as a downloadable PDF, this pattern is intended for personal use, allowing crafters to make toys for themselves, as gifts, or for charitable purposes. The pattern includes abbreviation notes to guide stitching throughout the project.
