Product Description
I recently visited India for the first time since living there as a child. It was an unbelievable experience to go back and see this amazingly wonderful and unique country through adult eyes. The trip was full of visual inspiration – the pictures I took were mostly of architecture, inlayed panels, delicate pierced screens. When I some of the tombs in Delhi, I immediately thought of hats. I used the pattern around the lower edge of these domes to create the stitch pattern for this hat. Worked in a simple knit and purl design, with a few cable crosses thrown in for good measure, this is a good hat for a beginner looking to try some new techniques. Sample shown was worked in Elspeth Lavold Silky Wool.
Skills needed: long tail casting on, knitting, purling, decreasing. Gauge: 22 sts/32 rows over 4 in/10 cm on larger needles in stockinette.
Delhi Beanie by Rachel Brown
What is Being Made
The Delhi Beanie is a knitted hat design created by independent designer Rachel Brown. This beanie represents a personal creative project inspired by the designer's experiences visiting New Delhi, India. The hat is suitable for a range of knitters with intermediate-level skills and is available as a downloadable PDF pattern.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses knitting as its primary construction method. The Delhi Beanie is worked in DK weight yarn, which is a versatile medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition while remaining relatively quick to work with. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters should be comfortable with fundamental knitting techniques and ready to tackle slightly more complex stitch patterns or shaping methods.
Knitting a beanie typically involves creating a tubular fabric worked in the round, which allows for seamless construction. The DK weight yarn choice makes this project accessible for intermediate knitters while still allowing for detailed stitch work and texture variations that create visual interest in the finished hat.
Stitches and Materials
While specific stitch details are not provided in the available pattern information, beanies of this type commonly feature a combination of ribbing for the cuff and stockinette or textured stitches for the crown. The use of DK weight yarn suggests the pattern likely calls for needles in the US 4-6 range, though exact needle specifications would be found in the complete downloadable PDF pattern.
Knitters will need DK weight yarn in quantities and colors as specified in the full pattern document, along with appropriate knitting needles and basic finishing supplies such as a yarn needle for weaving in ends.
