Dawn Chorus Flowerpots Creme Egg Covers by Needles & Pins

Project Overview

The Dawn Chorus Flowerpots Creme Egg Covers are decorative knitted egg covers designed by Needles & Pins. This project creates a charming set of garden bird-themed decorations featuring four different bird species—Blue Tit, Robin, Song Thrush, and Blackbird—each perched atop an upturned flowerpot. These covers are designed to conceal Creme eggs, mini chocolate foiled eggs, or small gifts, making them ideal for Easter celebrations, egg hunts, and springtime gift-giving. The project combines functional egg covers with whimsical garden bird decorations in a single, cohesive design.

What You Will Create

  • Four distinct garden bird designs with individual character and detail
  • Matching terracotta-colored flowerpot bases that serve as egg covers
  • Knitted decorations suitable for Easter displays, gift-giving, or seasonal home décor
  • Functional pieces that can hide eggs or small treasures beneath the flowerpots

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level project employs several fundamental and decorative knitting techniques to bring the garden bird theme to life. The flowerpot base is constructed using Stocking Stitch, a foundational knit fabric that creates a smooth, flat surface ideal for the pot's body. The pattern incorporates a Tuck Row technique at the cast-on edge, which creates the distinctive upturned rim characteristic of a flowerpot shape. This technique involves picking up yarn loops from the wrong side of the knitting and working them together with live stitches, adding structural definition and visual interest to the cover's top edge.

The birds themselves are created as integral components of each cover, knitted as one continuous piece rather than separate appliqués. This seamless construction method reduces finishing work and creates a unified, durable design. The use of multiple yarn colors and strategic stitch placement allows for bird-specific details and characteristics to emerge naturally from the knitting process.

Stitches Featured

  • Stocking Stitch (Stockinette Stitch): The primary stitch used for the flowerpot body, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric with a flat appearance on the right side
  • Garter Stitch: Likely used for borders, edges, or textural elements on the birds
  • Tuck Stitch: A decorative technique used to create the flowerpot rim by picking up loops from the cast-on edge and incorporating them into the working row
  • Knit and Purl combinations: Used to add shaping and definition to individual bird features

Materials Required

This project is designed to use leftover oddments of DK (Double Knit) weight yarn in assorted colors, making it an excellent stash-busting opportunity. The terracotta-colored yarn forms the foundation of the flowerpot covers, while additional yarn colors represent the plumage of each bird species. Specific colors would correspond to the natural coloring of each bird: blue and white for the Blue Tit, red-orange and brown for the Robin, brown and cream for the Song Thrush, and black for the Blackbird.

You will need one pair each of 4mm and 3.25mm knitting needles. The 4mm needles are used for the main flowerpot construction, while the smaller 3.25mm needles may be employed for finer details, bird features, or ribbed edging. Additionally, tiny amounts of toy stuffing or cotton wool are required to gently fill the bird bodies, adding dimension and shape to the three-dimensional bird forms.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this project requires familiarity with basic knitting techniques including casting on, Stocking Stitch, and binding off. The intermediate classification reflects the need to understand shaping techniques, color work integration, and the Tuck Row method. While not a beginner project, it remains accessible to knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore more decorative and dimensional knitting applications.

Design Details

The Dawn Chorus Flowerpots project celebrates springtime and garden themes through its choice of bird species and flowerpot imagery. Each bird is knitted as part of its corresponding cover, creating a unified piece that functions both as decoration and practical egg concealment. The upturned flowerpot design is both visually appealing and functional, providing a natural hiding place for eggs or small gifts. The project's versatility allows crafters

Perfect patterns!

This pattern was slightly more challenging as I hadn't knitted tuck stitch before. I soon learnt it though and was pleased with my flower pot. Patterns are easy to purchase and the benefit of downloading them is that you can start knitting straight away.
