Product Description
Temperatures during Summer can vary drastically from day to day, so I wanted to knit a lovely, bright Summer scarf, that won't necessarily warm me, but protect me from a chill when I go out.
When designing this shawl, the dandelions were all in bloom around me, in the same colour as this warm yellow.
English pattern, with some written instructions, most of cable and lace instructions are shown in charts. Shawl begins at center of back neck, and is shaped by increasing 4 stitches every other row.

Dandelion Shawl by Jane James Knitwear
Project Overview
The Dandelion Shawl is an intermediate-level knitted shawl design created by independent designer Jane James Knitwear. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished shawl measuring approximately 170 cm by 65 cm, making it an elegant accessory suitable for layering or draping. The design features cable pattern work throughout, offering knitters an opportunity to practice and refine their cable techniques while creating a sophisticated finished piece.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a rectangular shawl with substantial dimensions. The finished measurements of approximately 170 cm in length and 65 cm in width provide generous coverage, making the Dandelion Shawl suitable for wearing as a wrap, shawlette, or decorative accessory. The cable pattern construction creates visual interest and texture across the entire garment.
Techniques and Stitches Used
The Dandelion Shawl employs cable knitting as its primary stitch technique. The pattern utilizes right-slanting cables, abbreviated as C3B in the instructions. This cable technique involves keeping the first two stitches on a cable needle and holding it at the back while knitting the next stitch from the left needle, then knitting the two stitches from the cable needle. This classic cable manipulation creates the dimensional, twisted texture that defines the shawl's visual character.
Knitters work the shawl using circular needles, though the needles are used knitting back and forth in a flat construction rather than in the round. This approach accommodates the increasing number of stitches as the shawl grows while maintaining the ease and comfort of circular needle work. The gauge for this pattern is 24 stitches by 40 rows over a 10 by 10 centimeter swatch in the cable pattern, establishing the foundation for accurate sizing and fit.
Materials Required
Yarn: The Dandelion Shawl pattern calls for 4 skeins of Amore Cotton 300 yarn from Borgo de'Pazzi, with each skein weighing 100 grams and containing 300 meters. This yarn is classified as sport weight or fine weight, making it ideal for creating drape and delicate stitch definition. The Amore Cotton 300 yarn composition is 75% recycled cotton and 25% polyester, offering an eco-conscious fiber choice with durability and breathability. The recommended colorway is colour 104, though knitters may select alternative colors based on preference. The designer notes that while 3 skeins were used for the sample garment, obtaining a fourth skein is strongly advised to avoid running short on yardage during completion.
Needles and Notions: Knitters will need 3.5 mm circular needles, or whatever needle size is necessary to obtain the specified gauge. A stitch marker is essential for tracking pattern repeats and construction progress. A cable needle is optional but recommended for executing the cable stitches smoothly. A tapestry needle is optional and useful for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with cable techniques. The cable pattern work requires attention to stitch manipulation and pattern reading, while the straightforward rectangular construction keeps the overall project manageable for knitters developing their technical abilities.
