What is Being Made
The Damselfly baby cardi is a lightweight, feminine baby cardigan designed by Jessamyn Dukes. This knitted sweater features a circular yoke construction and is available in six sizes, with finished chest measurements ranging from 18.5 inches to 23 inches (47 to 58.5 centimeters). The garment is designed to be a quick and easy knit, making it an accessible project for knitters seeking to create a charming piece for infants and young children.
Design Features and Aesthetic
This baby cardigan showcases delicate embossed dragonfly lace motifs that are inspired by Barbara Walker's honeybee pattern. These decorative lace elements appear on the lower body, circular yoke, and each sleeve cuff, adding visual interest and a whimsical touch to the design. The remainder of the sweater is constructed in simple stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth, classic fabric base and contributes to the quick knitting pace of the project.
Picot hems created using a simple, no-sew closure method provide tidy, frilly edges that enhance the feminine aesthetic of the garment. I-cord ties serve as the closure mechanism, holding the front panels together without requiring buttons, which eliminates fussy buttoning and maintains the lightweight, delicate appearance of the sweater.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Damselfly baby cardi employs several key knitting techniques:
- Circular yoke construction: This modern shaping method allows for seamless yoke shaping and efficient knitting from the top down
- Stockinette stitch: Used for the main body and sleeves, creating a smooth, traditional knitted fabric
- Lace knitting: The embossed dragonfly motifs utilize lace techniques, with charted patterns provided for accurate stitch placement
- Picot hem edging: A decorative edge treatment created using a simple, no-sew closure method for a polished finish
- I-cord: Functional ties knitted using the I-cord technique to secure the cardigan fronts
Materials and Yarn Weight
The Damselfly baby cardi is designed to be knitted in heavy fingering or sport weight yarn. The yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 335 yards (306 meters) for the smallest size to 425 yards (389 meters) for the largest size. The sample garments shown in the pattern were knitted using premium hand-dyed yarns: Sanguine Gryphon Bugga! and Malabrigo Arroyo in the Jupiter colorway, with one skein of each yarn used for the modeled sample. The lightweight nature of the yarn weight contributes to the delicate, airy quality of the finished sweater, making it ideal for a baby garment.
Pattern Documentation
The pattern includes comprehensive documentation to support the knitting process. A full sweater schematic is provided on page 6, offering detailed measurements for all six sizes to ensure proper fit.
