Daintree Sweater by Bérangère Cailliau
What is Being Made
The Daintree is a versatile knitted sweater designed by independent designer Bérangère Cailliau, offered in two distinct versions to suit different seasons. Crafters can choose between a spring/summer sleeveless version featuring a scoop neckline, or a winter version with long sleeves and an elongated body. This downloadable PDF pattern provides comprehensive instructions for creating a sophisticated, seamlessly constructed garment suitable for intermediate knitters.
Construction Technique
The Daintree sweater is knitted seamlessly using a top-down construction method, a popular approach that allows for easy fitting adjustments and minimal finishing work. The pattern begins at the shoulders with strategic short rows and increases worked to shape the neckline. The back and front panels are worked flat up to the armholes, then joined together to continue the body in the round, creating a smooth, continuous fabric. For both versions, the sleeves are picked up at the armholes and worked in the round, ensuring consistent stitch definition and a professional appearance.
Stitches and Techniques
This intermediate-level pattern incorporates fundamental knitting techniques including short rows for neckline shaping, increases for proper fit and drape, and both flat and circular knitting methods. The seamless construction eliminates the need for seaming, reducing finishing time and creating clean, durable seams where sections are joined. The combination of flat and in-the-round knitting provides variety in the knitting experience while maintaining structural integrity throughout the garment.
Materials
The Daintree pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and drape for a refined finished garment. The designer recommends The Fibre Co. Canopy fingering yarn for the sleeveless version. Standard knitting needles appropriate for 4-ply yarn and the specified gauge are required, along with circular needles for working sections in the round. The exact yardage and needle sizes are detailed within the full PDF pattern.
