Daedalus Finger Gloves by NOSTOdesign

What Is Being Made

The Daedalus Finger Gloves are a pair of symmetrical knitted gloves designed for intermediate knitters. Created with kind permission of Woolly Wormhead, these gloves follow her original Daedalus Hat pattern from the Imperceptions collection. Both gloves are identical with no distinction between left and right, making them versatile and straightforward to construct.

Techniques Used

This knitting project employs several intermediate-level techniques that build upon fundamental knitting skills. The pattern requires working in the round using either double-pointed needles (DPNs) or circular needles with the "magic loop" method, allowing for seamless construction. Stranded knitting techniques are incorporated throughout the design, including the important skill of trapping long floats to maintain fabric integrity and prevent loose sections on the inside of the gloves.

Stitches and Construction Methods

The Daedalus Finger Gloves utilize several essential knitting stitches and methods:

  • Alternate cable cast-on for a sturdy, elastic foundation edge
  • Knit and purl stitches as the foundation of the fabric
  • Increases and decreases to shape the glove structure and finger sections
  • Stranded knitting for colorwork patterns, with techniques for managing long floats

The pattern provides both written instructions and charted patterns for clarity, with auxiliary schemes included on page 12 to aid in counting stitches and navigating rounds accurately.

Yarn and Materials

The Daedalus Finger Gloves are designed for light sport or fingering weight yarn. The sample shown in size L was knitted using Malabrigo Arroyo, a 100% wool superwash yarn with a yardage of 306 meters per 100 grams (335 yards per 100 grams). The colorway features Flama (Color A) and Regatta Blue (Color B) for the stranded knitting design. Knitters will need double-pointed needles or circular needles appropriate for the yarn weight, typically in sizes suitable for sport or fingering weight construction.

Sizing and Fit

Available in three sizes—M, L, and XL—the gloves accommodate hand circumferences of 17–18 cm (6.5–7 inches) for size M, 19–20 cm (7.5–8 inches) for size L, and 21–23 cm (8.5–9 inches) for size XL. The pattern recommends trying on the gloves during construction to verify proper finger length and width, ensuring a comfortable and well-fitted finished garment.

Pattern Format

This is a downloadable PDF pattern that combines written instructions with charted guidance, making it accessible to knitters who prefer either format. The inclusion of auxiliary schemes supports accurate stitch counting and round navigation throughout the project.
