Product Description
Cupcake Beanie basically named by its colorful yarn, I did a smaller size for my doll and the shape really resemble a cupcake. But don't worry, because this pattern is unisex, with a lot of color option of your choosing.
The size option only available for 40 cm (16") circumference, but to make another size is possible from adding or subtracting the pattern repeat.
Number of skeins I needed for this beanie around 50 gr of each color.
The pattern has been tested.
Thank you

Project Overview
The Cupcake Beanie is an intermediate-level knitted hat designed by Sally Yanita. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a charming, textured beanie with a finished circumference of 20 cm (8") and depth of 20 cm (8"), making it suitable for a child or small adult. The design showcases brioche knitting techniques combined with contrasting color work to create visual interest and dimension.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a fitted knit beanie hat featuring brioche stitch construction. The brioche technique creates a distinctive, elastic, and reversible fabric with pronounced vertical ridges that give the hat its characteristic textured appearance. The use of two contrasting yarn colors adds visual appeal and helps define the brioche pattern structure.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Cupcake Beanie employs several intermediate knitting techniques:
- Brioche Knitting: The primary construction method, which involves working with slipped stitches and yarn overs across two rows. One row uses the main color (MC) and the following row uses the contrasting color (CC), creating the distinctive brioche texture.
- Circular Knitting: The pattern is worked in the round using either a circular needle or double-pointed needles (DPNs), creating a seamless construction.
- Decreasing: The pattern includes knit 2 together (K tog) reductions to shape the crown of the beanie.
- Color Work: Two-color knitting is incorporated throughout, with the contrasting colors working together to emphasize the brioche stitch pattern.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes the following stitches and techniques:
- Knit (K): Basic knit stitch forming the foundation of the fabric.
- Brioche Knit (BRK): Knits the slipped stitch together with its yarn over, creating the characteristic brioche texture.
- Brioche Purl (BRP): Purls the slipped stitch together with its yarn over, used in alternating rows to build the brioche structure.
- Slip Yarn Over (Sl YO): With working yarn in front, slip one stitch and make a yarn over. This creates the foundation for brioche stitches in subsequent rows.
- Knit 2 Together (K tog): A basic decrease used for shaping, particularly in the crown decreases.
Materials and Tools
The Cupcake Beanie pattern requires DK weight yarn in two contrasting colors, with approximately 50 grams needed of each color. Knitting needles should be 5.00 mm (US 8) in either a 20 cm (8") circular needle or double-pointed needle format, sized to achieve proper gauge. Additional tools include a cable needle for managing stitches, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 18 rows over a 10 cm (4") square in the pattern repeat. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements. The brioche stitch gauge note clarifies that one row of brioche consists of one row in the main color followed by one row in the contrasting color. Knitters should adjust needle size as needed to match the specified gauge.
