Crown of Glory Scarf/Stole by Trisha Paetsch
What Is Being Made
The Crown of Glory Scarf/Stole is an elegant knitted accessory designed by Trisha Paetsch that offers versatility in sizing. This pattern creates two distinct finished pieces: a scarf measuring 16.5cm x 213cm (6.5" x 84"), or a larger stole measuring 32cm x 213cm (12.25" x 84"). The design is particularly suited for showcasing handspun yarn, as the pattern is engineered to allow crafters to use nearly the entire skein without significant waste.
Craft and Techniques
This is an advanced-level knitting project that employs thoughtful yarn management techniques. The pattern incorporates a unique approach where crafters weigh their yarn before and after working sections, allowing precise calculation of yarn usage throughout the project. This method ensures efficient use of handspun or specialty yarns where yardage may vary. The Crown of Glory pattern repeats multiple times—three times for the scarf version and five times for the stole—creating a rhythmic, structured design element throughout the length of the finished piece.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern employed in this design is the Travelling Eyelet stitch, which creates a delicate, textured fabric with small decorative holes. This stitch is worked at a gauge of 28 stitches over 10cm (4 inches), producing a fabric with refined definition and visual interest. The eyelet pattern is particularly effective for displaying the qualities of handspun yarns, as the stitch structure allows the yarn's character to shine through.
Materials and Tools
- Yarn: Fingering weight yarn, approximately 100g for the scarf or 200g for the stole. The pattern is written to accommodate any fingering weight yarn and is ideal for handspun varieties. The sample was knitted using handspun yarn from Maude & Me in fingering weight.
- Needles: 2mm (US 0) needles, or size appropriate to achieve your preferred gauge
- Cast-on method: Long Tail cast on, with 47 stitches for the scarf or 89 stitches for the stole
Pattern Structure
The Crown of Glory pattern is repeated three times for the scarf version and five times for the stole version, with a final increase of one stitch on the last repeat of row 8 for both sizes, bringing the final stitch count to 48 stitches (scarf) or 90 stitches (stole). This structured repetition creates visual rhythm while the yarn-weighing method ensures you have sufficient yarn remaining to complete all pattern repeats through to the finished edge.
