Crossroads Hat by Frogginette Knitting Patterns
Project Overview
The Crossroads Hat is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Lisa Chemery and published by Frogginette Knitting Patterns. This intermediate-level hat project is suitable for knitters with some experience and offers versatility across multiple sizes, from Baby through Adult-Large. The pattern showcases colorwork techniques and is designed to be worked in sport weight yarn.
Available Sizes and Fit
The Crossroads Hat is available in five size options accommodating a wide range of head sizes:
- Baby: Head circumference up to 16 inches (40.5 cm), finished hat depth 6.25 inches (16 cm)
- Toddler: Head circumference up to 18 inches (45.5 cm), finished hat depth 7 inches (18 cm)
- Child: Head circumference up to 19 inches (48 cm), finished hat depth 8 inches (20.5 cm)
- Adult-Small: Head circumference up to 21 inches (53.5 cm), finished hat depth 8.25 inches (21 cm)
- Adult-Large: Head circumference up to 23 inches (58.5 cm), finished hat depth 8.75 inches (22 cm)
The finished hat circumference just above the brim ranges from 13.75 inches (35 cm) in the Baby size to 21 inches (53.5 cm) in the Adult-Large size. The pattern is designed with approximately 2 inches (5 cm) of negative ease, creating a snug, form-fitting hat that stays securely in place.
Yarn and Materials
The Crossroads Hat is worked in sport weight yarn, a lightweight option that creates a refined fabric suitable for hats worn in mild to moderate weather. The pattern requires multiple yarn colors to achieve its colorwork design:
- Main Color (MC): Approximately 80 yards (Baby) to 160 yards (Adult-Large), or 73 to 146 meters
- Contrasting Color 1 (CC1): Approximately 20-40 yards or 18-36.5 meters
- Contrasting Color 2 (CC2): Required for the design (yardage specified in full pattern)
- Contrasting Color 3 (CC3): Required for the design (yardage specified in full pattern)
The pattern sample shown features De Rerum Natura Ulysse yarn in the colorways Lagon (main color), Plume (CC1), Fauve (CC2), and Doré (CC3), displayed in the Adult-Small size. Knitters may substitute any sport weight yarn of similar weight and yardage requirements.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
As an intermediate-level pattern, the Crossroads Hat employs colorwork knitting techniques to create its distinctive design. The use of multiple contrasting colors worked into the fabric requires familiarity with stranded colorwork or similar color-changing methods. The pattern involves working in the round, a fundamental technique for hat construction that creates seamless cylindrical fabric. Knitters will work from the brim upward, shaping the crown to create the finished depth appropriate to each size.
The specific stitches and construction methods are detailed in the complete downloadable pattern file. The intermediate difficulty rating indicates that knitters should be comfortable with basic knitting fundamentals and ready to work with color changes and potentially more complex stitch patterns.
