Product Description
Fingering weight yarn is held double to make the textured pattern on these warm squishy mitts. Use two strands of the same colour for a subtle textured mitt or choose contrasting colours for a bold statement. The mitts knit up quickly, ideal for a last-minute gift.
The mitts are intended to be worn with slight negative ease, to fit a medium sized woman's hand (approx 7 to 7.5" around the palm). Pattern gauge is 22 st and 28 rows over 4 inches on 4mm (US 6) needles using the doubled fingering weight yarn.
You will need approx. 90 yards of each of two different colours of fingering weight yarn (or 180 yards, split into two balls, of one colour), 4mm needles (or sized needed to obtain gauge) for working in the round, and 2 stitch markers.
You need to be able to work in the round over a small diameter, work increases and pick up stitches.
Crosspatch Mitts by Kirsten McTeer
What is Being Made
Crosspatch Mitts are a pair of quick and easy-to-knit fingerless mittens designed by Kirsten McTeer. These intermediate-level mitts showcase a striking colorwork pattern created through a unique two-strand yarn technique, making them an ideal project for knitters looking to explore color manipulation without traditional stranded colorwork complexity.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern requires 180 yards (164 meters) total of fingering-weight yarn, divided equally between two different colors—90 yards (82 meters) in each color. The two strands are held together throughout the project, allowing you to experiment with color combinations. You can choose similar colors for a subtle effect, contrasting yarns for bold definition, or combine a solid yarn with a variegated yarn for dramatic patterning, as shown in the original design.
Needles and Tools
Construction requires 4mm (US 6) needles in your preferred style for working in the round. Additional tools include two stitch markers, a small stitch holder or waste yarn for holding stitches, and a darning needle for weaving in ends.
Techniques and Stitches
Crosspatch Mitts employ several fundamental knitting techniques:
- Double-strand knitting: Two strands of fingering-weight yarn are held together throughout, creating fabric with increased density and visual interest
- Stocking stitch: The primary fabric structure, created by alternating knit and purl rows when working flat, or continuous knit rounds when working in the round
- Two-color colorwork: The pattern uses a selective yarn technique where one yarn is brought forward and held while the other yarn is used for knitting, creating the distinctive Crosspatch pattern
- Make one increases (M1): Used for shaping the mitts, this increase is worked by picking up the loop between stitches and working into the back of it
- In-the-round construction: The mitts are worked circularly using stitch markers to denote the beginning of rounds
Pattern Specifications
The pattern is worked at a tension of 22 stitches and 28 rows to 4 inches over stocking stitch using 4mm (US 6) needles with the yarn held doubled. The colorwork pattern alternates between working with individual yarn strands and working with both strands held together, creating the characteristic cross-patch effect that defines these mitts.
