Product Description

My coat is always hanging open, so what could be better than a giant scarf to keep my middle warm? This simple eyelet scarf is kicked up a notch by knitting it on the bias. Since it’s knit out of a soft, bulky yarn, it’s still warm despite the holes.

Note - will add more pics as soon as it's finished. I did some math to figur out the yarn requirements.

Crooked Eyelets Scarf by BooJay Knits

Project Overview

The Crooked Eyelets Scarf is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Bethany Bowser for BooJay Knits. This intermediate-level project creates a generous rectangular scarf measuring 10 inches wide by 72 inches long, perfect for wrapping around the neck and shoulders for warmth and style. The scarf combines functional design with decorative eyelet detailing, making it both a practical accessory and an attractive finished piece.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a long, rectangular scarf with an open, airy texture created through strategically placed eyelets. Despite the holes that characterize the eyelet design, the scarf maintains excellent warmth due to the use of chunky, bulky yarn. The finished dimensions of 10 inches by 72 inches provide ample fabric for comfortable wrapping and layering over coats and jackets.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Crooked Eyelets Scarf employs a bias knitting technique as its defining construction method. Bias knitting involves working the fabric at a diagonal angle rather than straight up and down, which creates a naturally slanted appearance and adds visual interest to the finished piece. This technique is achieved through strategic increases and decreases worked into the pattern rows, causing the fabric to grow diagonally across the needles. The bias construction elevates this simple eyelet pattern into a more sophisticated design.

Stitches and Stitch Pattern

The scarf is worked using fundamental knitting stitches combined into a repeating pattern sequence:

  • Knit stitch (k) – the basic forward stitch
  • Purl stitch (p) – the reverse of the knit stitch
  • Yarn over (yo) – creates the decorative holes characteristic of eyelet patterns by wrapping yarn around the needle to form new stitches
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – a decrease stitch that reduces stitch count and pairs with yarn overs to create balanced eyelet openings
  • Knit front and back (kfb) – an increase stitch that creates new stitches within a row, essential to the bias construction

The pattern works across an 8-row repeat that is repeated continuously until the scarf reaches its full 72-inch length. The combination of yarn overs and decreases creates the eyelet holes, while the increases and decreases positioned throughout the rows produce the diagonal bias effect.

Materials and Specifications

The Crooked Eyelets Scarf is designed to be worked with chunky or bulky weight yarn, requiring three balls of yarn with 110 yards per ball, for a total yardage of approximately 330 yards. Chunky yarn works quickly and creates a substantial, cozy fabric that provides warmth despite the open eyelet construction.

Knitting needles in size 13 (or the size necessary to achieve proper gauge) are required for this project. The pattern specifies a gauge of 2.5 stitches per inch and 4 rows per inch when measured in the pattern stitch and unstretched. However, the pattern notes that gauge is not critical for this project, making it forgiving for knitters who may not achieve exact gauge measurements.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the individual stitches used are fundamental, the combination of bias construction with eyelet patterning requires knitters to maintain attention to stitch placement and pattern sequence throughout the project. Knitters should be comfortable reading pattern rows, managing increases and decreases, and understanding how yarn overs create decorative holes. The intermediate rating makes this pattern suitable for knitters with some experience beyond absolute beginners.
