Product Description
This little bag is perfect for tiny hands to carry their treasures with, or DnD dice and characters to your next game. (It would probably also work as a small bag to organize things in your purse as well)
There is no gauge on this pattern
You can use any type of yarn, solid or varigated, as long as it's a worsted weight, that seems to be the best for it. I just listed a few that I have used for these bags, but you do not have to use those.
I have made this with a strap and as a cinch bag, instructions for both are in the pattern as well. If you have any questions, please comment on the post or message me on Instagram.
The amount of yardage depends with this pattern on how tall you make it. I normally do 5 rows of the crocodile stitch, if you do 6+ obviously you will use more yarn. =]
Crocodile Stitch DnD/Mermaid Bag by Sam Bartley
What Is Being Made
This is a crocheted dice bag designed by Sam Bartley from Creating In The Mitten. The bag is suitable for holding dice for tabletop gaming (DnD/Dungeons & Dragons) or serving as a decorative mermaid-themed pouch. The project uses a crocodile stitch technique to create textured, scale-like fabric that evokes a mermaid or dragon aesthetic, making it both functional and visually striking for gaming enthusiasts and craft lovers.
Techniques Used
The pattern employs the crocodile stitch, a popular crochet technique that creates a dimensional, overlapping scale pattern reminiscent of crocodile or fish scales. This advanced textural technique is built upon foundational crochet methods including:
- Magic circle – used to begin the project with a closed center
- Double crochet (dc) – the primary stitch building block
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used to join rounds and create a seamless circular construction
- Increases – strategic stitch placement to expand the bag's circumference in early rows
The pattern uses a structured increase sequence across multiple rows to establish the bag's shape before the crocodile stitch texture is applied, demonstrating intermediate-level construction skills.
Stitches Used
The foundation of this pattern relies on essential crochet stitches:
- Double Crochet (dc) – forms the base fabric and primary stitch throughout the pattern
- Chain Stitch (ch) – used at the beginning of rows (noted as not counting toward stitch count)
- Slip Stitch (sl st) – joins rounds to create a cohesive circular structure
- Magic Circle – creates a tight, closed center for the bag opening
These fundamental stitches are combined and repeated in specific patterns to build the crocodile stitch texture, which creates the dimensional scale effect characteristic of the finished design.
Materials
This project requires minimal materials, making it an efficient and accessible crochet pattern:
- Yarn: One skein of Caron Simply Soft (or similar worsted weight/aran yarn); the full skein is not required, allowing for yarn stash use
- Hook: Size 5.0 crochet hook
- Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and scissors for finishing
The use of worsted weight yarn with a size 5.0 hook creates a medium-weight fabric suitable for a structured bag that will hold dice securely while remaining portable and easy to handle.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, appropriate for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to explore textured stitch techniques like crocodile stitch. While the individual stitches are basic, the crocodile stitch application and the structured increase sequences require attention to detail and pattern-reading comprehension.
