Crochet Snake by IJ Makes

What is Being Made

Mrs Eviltedi Crochet Snake is a beginner-friendly amigurumi toy project designed for crafters new to crochet. This stuffed snake toy can be customized with single or multi-color variations, making it an accessible introduction to toy construction through crochet.

Techniques Used

The crochet snake employs fundamental amigurumi construction techniques suitable for beginners. The main body is worked in continuous spirals rather than traditional joined rows, which creates a seamless appearance and eliminates the need for slip stitches between rounds. This spiral method is a core technique in toy making, allowing crafters to build three-dimensional forms efficiently. The pattern emphasizes that gauge is flexible for this project—the primary concern is achieving a tight enough fabric with the chosen hook and yarn combination to prevent stuffing from showing through gaps.

Stitches Used

  • Single Crochet (US terminology) – also called double crochet in UK terminology, this is the primary stitch throughout the pattern
  • Chain (ch) – used for foundation and structural elements, including the tongue base
  • Increase (inc) – created by working 2 single crochets into a single stitch to expand the fabric
  • Decrease (dec) – a standard crochet decrease technique worked by inserting the hook, pulling through yarn, repeating in the next stitch, then pulling yarn through all loops to consolidate stitches and shape the toy

Materials and Tools

The crochet snake is worked with double knitting (DK) weight yarn and a 3mm crochet hooksafety eyes are an optional alternative for toys intended for older children (not recommended for very small children due to choking hazards). Stuffing material is required to fill the completed snake form.

Construction Sequence

The pattern recommends beginning with the tongue, which is constructed separately and secured inside the head before stuffing. This approach prevents the tongue from becoming loose or a choking hazard. The tongue begins with a chain foundation of 12 stitches, with a 10cm tail left for attachment to the body.
