What a year?!?! And the cooler weather is just around the corner. As a world community, we are going to have to do all we can to ensure that our neighbors, friends, colleagues, and family are secure and safe in their food, warmth, and shelter. To this end, I am providing a series of free patterns under the heading: Knitting for Charity, hoping to encourage my fellow knitters to make a few cozy, warm objects to share locally with those in need. We may not have resources to aid with food or shelter, but many of us have yarn, needles, and the skills to create. For those of us who can, let's do make winter items to share.
Cozy, Warm Knit Hat by Becca Steiner
What Is Being Made
This is a beginner-friendly knit hat designed to fit most head sizes, with a finished circumference that stretches from 18" to 24". The pattern is ideal for creating warm, cozy headwear suitable for personal use or charitable donation. The design accommodates optional colorwork, allowing crafters to add a second color for visual interest and pizzazz.
Knitting Techniques
The hat is constructed using knitting in the round, a fundamental circular knitting technique that creates seamless, tubular fabric. Crafters can choose between two methods to achieve this construction:
- Circular needle method: Uses a US 7 circular 16" needle paired with US 7 double-pointed needles (dpns) for the crown shaping
- Magic Loop method: Uses a single US 7 circular 40" needle throughout the entire project for those who prefer working with one needle
Both techniques eliminate the need for seaming and produce a professional, finished appearance. The pattern is suitable for beginners, making it an excellent introduction to circular knitting.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is Stockinette Stitch, which creates the classic smooth, V-patterned fabric characteristic of knit garments. Stockinette Stitch is achieved by alternating knit and purl rows when working flat, or by knitting every round when working in the round. This versatile stitch is fundamental to knitting and provides a clean canvas for colorwork if desired.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The pattern requires 1 skein of worsted weight yarn, totaling 200–250 yards. The original design was created using Caron Simply Soft, a popular acrylic yarn known for softness and durability. For charitable donations, the designer recommends soft, easily washable yarns such as superwash merino or acrylic blends to ensure the finished hat remains comfortable and practical through repeated washing.
Optional second color yarn (approximately 50 yards) can be incorporated for added visual interest and design variation.
Needles and Notions
The pattern calls for US 7 needles in either circular or double-pointed configurations, depending on the preferred knitting method. Additional supplies include 1 stitch marker to track the beginning of each round and 1 yarn needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Gauge
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 5.5 stitches per 1 inch (or 22 stitches per 4 inches) in Stockinette Stitch when knit flat. Achieving proper gauge ensures the finished hat will fit correctly within the intended 18" to 24" head circumference range.
