A little high fashion and a little bit home style, it’s the perfect sweater to lounge about in on the weekends, or to head out for a bit of shopping with the gal pals. Cozy Celtic Raglan Sweater by Knitatude

What is Being Made

The Cozy Celtic Raglan is a women's pullover sweater designed by Knitatude (Chantal) that combines comfort with sophisticated cable detailing. This garment features an oversized, relaxed body silhouette paired with a prominent jumbo cowl neckline, making it suitable for both casual weekend lounging and social outings. The sweater is available in five sizes ranging from Small through 2XL, accommodating various body types and fit preferences.

Design Features and Construction

This raglan-style sweater showcases traveling cables as its primary design element, creating visual interest across the garment. The construction method is knit in the round, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless, professional finish. The sweater includes a jumbo cowl neckline that provides both warmth and a fashion-forward aesthetic. The raglan construction—where sleeves are increased diagonally from the neckline down to the underarm—creates a comfortable, modern fit.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The primary stitch used throughout the body of this sweater is Stockinette Stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric surface. Cable stitches are incorporated as decorative traveling elements that add texture and visual complexity to the design. The pattern requires working with stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction points, including a dedicated marker for the beginning of round and separate markers for cable placement.

The sweater is worked using the circular knitting method, which requires managing stitches across multiple circular needles and keeping track of increases for the raglan shaping. Cable work is managed with a cable needle or double-pointed needle to temporarily hold stitches while crossing them over other stitches to create the twisted cable effect.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern calls for bulky weight yarn in the form of Lion Brand Woolease Thick N' Quick or equivalent yarn of the same weight. The yardage requirements vary by size: Small requires 424 yards (387 meters), Medium through XL require 500-550 yards, and 2XL requires 600 yards (548 meters). The pattern accommodates 4 to 6 skeins depending on the chosen size.

The recommended needle sizes are US 17/12mm circular needles measuring 16 inches (40cm) for the initial cast-on and ribbing, and US 15/10mm circular needles measuring 24 inches (60cm) for the main body knitting. A US 15/10mm cable needle or set of double-pointed needles is required for cable work. The gauge is established at 9 stitches by 11 rows per 4 inches (10cm) when working Stockinette Stitch in the round on US 15/10mm needles.

Skill Level and Knitting Experience

While the product attributes indicate a beginner difficulty level, the pattern itself is labeled as Intermediate, suggesting that knitters should have foundational knowledge of knitting in the round, cable techniques, and raglan construction before beginning this project. The pattern is well-suited for knitters who have completed several projects and are comfortable managing multiple stitch markers and working with cables.

Additional Supplies

Beyond yarn and needles, the pattern requires standard finishing supplies including 6 stitch markers (with specific color differentiation for the beginning-of-round marker and cable markers), scissors for cutting yarn, and a darning needle for weaving in ends and any necessary seaming or finishing work.
