Counterpoint is the re-working of the very first block I ever designed. It was inspired by several vintage patterns and worked in DK yarn, this new 12 inch version is intended for use with worsted weight yarn. Those of you who are familiar with my work will recognize the “special stitches”. What you may not know is that the ring of picots in this pattern gave me the idea for the loop version of the crocodile stitch. This pattern uses American terminology throughout.
Note: Colors and color placement are the choice of the crocheter, therefore no instructions are given for color changes. Simply fasten off where desired and replace the beginning ch in the next row/round with the appropriate standing st.
Counterpoint is a 12-inch crochet afghan block designed by Joyce Lewis. This pattern represents a modern reworking of one of the designer's earliest creations, drawing inspiration from vintage crochet patterns. The block is crafted in worsted weight yarn and is designed to be worked as a standalone square that can be combined with other blocks to create larger blankets and throws. At intermediate difficulty level, this project is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch work and pattern reading.
The Counterpoint block incorporates several signature techniques characteristic of Joyce Lewis's design work. The pattern features a distinctive ring of picots that served as the creative inspiration for the designer's loop version of the crocodile stitch. Crocheters will work with standing stitches for seamless transitions between rows and rounds, and the pattern employs color changes that are left to the crocheter's discretion. The instructions use American crochet terminology throughout, ensuring clarity for those familiar with standard American abbreviations and stitch definitions.
This pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, with Red Heart Super Saver specifically recommended. A size H/8 (5.00 mm) crochet hook is required, though the pattern notes that hook size may be adjusted as needed to achieve the correct gauge. The finished block measures 12 inches square, making it an ideal size for afghan projects where multiple blocks are sewn or crocheted together.
Achieving proper gauge is essential for this project. The pattern specifies that 8 double crochet stitches and 3 rows should measure 2 inches. The center filet square portion of the block measures approximately 3 by 3 inches. These gauge measurements ensure that the finished 12-inch block will be the correct size for coordinating with other afghan blocks in a larger project.
The Counterpoint block offers flexibility in color selection and placement. Rather than providing specific color-change instructions, the pattern empowers the crocheter to choose their own color scheme and decide where color transitions occur. When changing colors, crocheters simply fasten off at the desired point and replace the beginning chain of the next row or round with an appropriate standing stitch. This approach allows for creative customization while maintaining the structural integrity of the block.

Although the designer admitted the adaptation, this was too similar to the free DK version
