Product Description
This design reminds me of trails in the mountains that our family likes to hike. The name Copper Trail is a combination of these trails and the beautiful coppery color of The Farmer’s Daughter yarn. It is perfect to wear on a fall hike in the mountains or wherever your feet take you.
This hat is worked from the bottom up in the round on a 16” circular needle, switching to DPNs when necessary. This hat uses a cable needle, but you can also use the “cable without a cable needle” technique. This hat uses a small amount of contrast color on the brim of the hat and for a pom pom. You may opt to use only one color throughout and/or omit the pom pom.
Copper Trail Knit Hat by Shannon Larson
What Is Being Made
Copper Trail is a downloadable knitting pattern for a beginner-friendly hat designed by Shannon Larson of Justlivin Designs. This is a classic bottom-up construction hat that features cable stitch detailing and optional contrast color accents on the brim and crown pom pom.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Copper Trail hat employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The hat is worked in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles (DPNs), which allows for seamless construction. The pattern incorporates cable stitches as a primary design element. Notably, the pattern offers flexibility by including the option to use a traditional cable needle or alternatively employ the "cable without a cable needle" technique, making it accessible to knitters at various skill levels. The hat transitions from circular needles to DPNs when the circumference becomes too small for the circular needle to work comfortably.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The primary stitch used in this pattern is stockinette stitch in the round (st st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric. Cable stitches are incorporated as decorative elements throughout the hat. The pattern requires basic knitting fundamentals including increases and decreases for shaping the crown. Stitch markers are used to denote pattern repeats and the beginning of rounds.

Design Flexibility
