What is Being Made

The Contrast Vest is a wearable oversized unisex vest featuring a colourful geometric design. This knitted top is designed to express character and personal style, suitable for all ages and sexes. The oversized fit provides a trendy silhouette that works as a standalone piece or coordinated with loved ones as a couple or family set. Available in two sizes: 2–4Y with a finished chest circumference of 84cm, and 5–9Y with a finished chest circumference of 100cm.

Knitting Techniques

The Contrast Vest is constructed using a bottom-up method, beginning at the lower edge and working in the round with colour patterns up to the armholes. The construction process involves several distinct phases:

• The lower body is worked in continuous rounds with geometric colour patterns inspired by Fair Isle techniques
• Once the armholes are reached, the front and back sections are separated and worked flat back and forth
• The upper vest is completed in a specific order: left front, right front, and back pieces
• Shoulders are grafted together to create a seamless join
• The V-neckline and armholes are shaped simultaneously on the front
• Stitches are picked up from the V-neck and armhole edges to create finished bands

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

This project employs Fair Isle colour work techniques, which involve knitting with multiple colours in geometric patterns across rows. The Fair Isle method creates the popping colours and geometric shapes that define the vest's distinctive appearance. The use of grafting at the shoulders demonstrates intermediate-level shaping and finishing skills. Band stitches picked up from edges provide a professional, polished finish to the neckline and armholes.

Materials

The Contrast Vest is knitted using aran weight yarn, which provides structure and drape suitable for an oversized garment. The project requires knitting needles appropriate for aran yarn and the ability to work with multiple yarn colours simultaneously for the Fair Isle colour patterns.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this project requires competence with colour work techniques, the ability to transition between circular and flat knitting, understanding of garment shaping, and familiarity with finishing techniques such as grafting and picking up stitches.
