Product Description

Overview of design:

The motif in this design takes inspiration from a larger body of work exploring never-ending lines that weave in and out with reference and respect to one another.

It is a sleeveless T-shirt worked bottom up in the round until the armholes are reached at which point the front and back are worked separately in the flat. Lower hem and shoulders are shaped with German short rows (instructions provided). Shoulders are slightly wider than the bust to cover the shoulders better, and the Tee has a shallow round neckline below which is the lace motif. The armholes have a knitted selvedge edge. The garment is slightly cropped with the lowest point of the hem sitting 15cm below the natural waist. It is designed to be worn with about 5-10 cm (2-4”) of ease. Model is 162cm and wears size 3 with 5 cm of ease.

Red sample knitted in Fyberspates Gleem Lace (strawberry), Blue sample knitted in Miro Silky Yum (Ahura). Please allow for additional yardage it lengthening the garment.

Continuity Tee Sleeveless T-Shirt with Lace Insert

What is Being Made

The Continuity Tee is a sleeveless T-shirt designed by Janine Whale of Conexus Knits, featuring a distinctive lace motif insert below a shallow round neckline. This garment is slightly cropped, with the lowest part of the hem sitting approximately 15cm below the natural waist. The design incorporates thoughtful shaping elements including short row shaping to the lower hem and sloped shoulders that are slightly wider than the bust measurement to provide better shoulder coverage. The armholes are finished with a knitted selvedge edge for a refined appearance.

Design Inspiration and Concept

The Continuity Tee draws inspiration from a larger body of work exploring never-ending lines and shapes that weave in and out with reference and respect to one another. The lace motif takes its conceptual foundation from the natural inclination to visually track lines and find their endings, only to discover oneself back at the origin. This philosophical approach to pattern design creates a cohesive visual narrative within the garment.

Construction Techniques

  • Bottom-up construction worked in the round until armholes are reached
  • Short row shaping applied to the lower hem for custom fit and drape
  • Sloped shoulder shaping designed wider than bust for improved shoulder coverage
  • Knitted selvedge edge finishing on armholes
  • Shallow round neckline shaping

Stitches and Lace Work

The Continuity Tee features lace stitch work as a central design element. The lace insert is positioned prominently below the neckline, showcasing the intricate interplay of yarn overs and decreases characteristic of lace knitting. The lace motif reflects the design philosophy of continuous, interconnected lines and serves as the visual focal point of this intermediate-level project.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern is designed to be worked in lace weight yarn, which creates the delicate, open fabric characteristic of lace knitting. The lightweight nature of lace yarn allows for the intricate stitch definition required to showcase the lace motif clearly. Knitters will require appropriate needles sized for lace weight yarn to achieve proper gauge and fabric drape.

Difficulty Level

The Continuity Tee is classified as an intermediate knitting project. This difficulty rating reflects the combination of techniques required, including in-the-round construction, short row shaping, lace stitch work, and custom shoulder shaping. Knitters should have foundational skills in these techniques before beginning this project.
