What Is Being Made

The Coniston Sweater is a cosy hooded sweater designed for children, suitable for both boys and girls. Inspired by the landscape and reflections of Coniston Water in Cumbria, this garment combines practical warmth with nature-inspired design. The sweater features a hood and is available in three finished sizes: size 1 (53cm/21" chest, approximately age 2-3), size 2 (58.5cm/23" chest, approximately age 4-5), and size 3 (63.5cm/25" chest, approximately age 6-7). The garment includes positive ease, with actual chest measurements of 56cm/22", 62cm/24.5", and 68cm/27" respectively across the three sizes.

Knitting Techniques and Skills

This intermediate-level knitting project requires several fundamental techniques. Knitters will practice casting on to begin the garment, work with knit and purl stitches to create the fabric structure, and use seaming to join flat pieces together. The pattern also involves picking up and knitting stitches, a technique used to add the neckline finishing and hood. The circular needle is used for knitting back and forth around the neckline, demonstrating versatile needle application beyond traditional in-the-round knitting.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout the Coniston Sweater is stocking stitch, which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric. Stocking stitch is achieved by alternating knit rows and purl rows, producing the characteristic V-pattern texture on the right side of the work. This stitch pattern is worked to a tension of 14 stitches and 20 rows to 10cm, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Coniston Sweater uses chunky weight yarn, specifically 12ply/7wpi bulky weight, worked in two contrasting yarn colors. Size 1 requires 4 balls (300m) of Yarn A and 3 balls (225m) of Yarn B. Size 2 requires 5 balls (450m) of Yarn A and 4 balls (300m) of Yarn B. Size 3 requires 5 balls (450m) of Yarn A and 4 balls (300m) of Yarn B. The sample garment was knitted using Rowan Renew in the colorways Digger (Yarn A) and Truck (Yarn B), though this yarn is now discontinued and alternative chunky weight yarns may be substituted.

Needles and Notions

The pattern requires 6mm straight needles of at least 30cm length for working flat pieces, and a 6mm circular needle for the neckline shaping. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for seaming and finishing the garment.
