Color Bliss Pullover Sweater by Carol Herman

What is Being Made

Color Bliss is a seamless, top-down pullover sweater designed by Carol Herman as an ideal stash-buster project. This garment celebrates color as its primary design feature, incorporating beautiful, happy, and joyful color combinations through stripes, blocks of color, and a distinctive rolled neckline. The sweater is available in ten sizes ranging from 36 inches to 54 inches bust measurement, making it suitable for a wide range of body types. The design offers flexibility in ease, with the featured example showing no ease at the bust and 4½ inches of positive ease at the waist, allowing knitters to customize the fit based on their personal measurements and preferences.

Techniques Used

Color Bliss employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques that create its seamless construction and polished finish. The sweater is worked in the round, a method that eliminates the need for seaming and creates a continuous fabric. The pattern requires proficiency with multiple cast-on methods, including the Long-Tail Cast-On and Cable Cast-On for establishing the initial stitches, as well as the Backwards-Loop Cast-On for specific sections. Knitters must be comfortable picking up stitches, a technique essential for adding new sections to the existing fabric. The pattern incorporates both increase and decrease methods: m1 (make one) increases for shaping, and k2tog (knit two together) and ssk (slip, slip, knit) decreases for tailoring the garment to fit. The top-down construction method allows knitters to try on the sweater as they work and adjust length as needed.

Stitches Used

  • Long-Tail Cast-On: Used for establishing the foundation stitches at the neckline
  • Cable Cast-On: An alternative cast-on method for creating a sturdy edge
  • Backwards-Loop Cast-On: Applied for specific sections requiring a flexible cast-on edge
  • Knit Stitch: The primary stitch forming the body of the sweater
  • m1 (Make One) Increase: Used for shaping the sweater's body and sleeves
  • k2tog (Knit Two Together): A right-leaning decrease for shaping
  • ssk (Slip, Slip, Knit): A left-leaning decrease for balanced shaping
  • Picking Up Stitches: Applied to add stitches along existing edges for seamless construction

Materials

Color Bliss is designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn, making it an excellent choice for knitters with worsted or DK weight yarn in their stash. The featured green sweater example uses The Fiber Co. Cumbria in the colorway Helvellyn for Color A, with yardage requirements varying by size. The pattern includes a yardage chart on page 8 to assist knitters who wish to substitute yarn while maintaining the intended fabric characteristics. Knitters will need needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn, typically in sizes suitable for working in the round to accommodate the seamless, top-down construction method. The color-blocked design encourages creative yarn substitution, allowing crafters to personalize their sweater with their preferred color combinations from their existing stash.

Design Features

The Color Bliss sweater stands out for its emphasis on color play and joyful design. The garment incorporates multiple color elements through stripes and color blocks, transforming the sweater into a canvas for creative yarn choices. The rolled neckline provides a casual, finished appearance that complements the playful color work. As a top-down, seamless construction, the sweater offers practical advantages including the ability to try on the garment during knitting and adjust the final length to personal preference. This design approach also eliminates seaming, reducing finishing work and creating a more professional appearance in the completed garment.
