Product Description
My sister-in-law requested a hat because she is always cold, but as a stylist she can't afford to wear a warm hat that messes up her "do", especially at work. The hat is designed with extra ease and slouch, so as not to crush her perfectly coiffed curls, but the double-layer slip stitch pattern provides extra warmth.
Most any wool or wool-blend worsted weight yarn would work well in this hat pattern - don’t be afraid to combine two different yarns to get the color combination that makes you happy. An indie-dyed vibrant yarn would look great against a dark commercial yarn, or maybe two small skeins of hand-spun!
The hat is worked from the brim to the crown in the round using a ribbed brim and an all-over two-color slip stitch pattern. Crown decreases are worked withing the slip stitch pattern. The design is both written and charted. These instructions do not recommend a particular method for knitting in the round.
Coaxial Hat by Amy Maceyko
What Is Being Made
The Coaxial Hat is an intermediate-level knitted hat designed with extra ease and slouch to provide warmth without crushing the wearer's hairstyle. This design was created to solve a specific need: providing genuine warmth for someone who works as a stylist and cannot wear traditional fitted hats that would disturb their carefully styled curls. The hat's generous fit makes it an ideal choice for anyone seeking both comfort and heat retention without sacrificing their appearance.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This hat is worked in the round from the brim to the crown, a classic top-down construction method that allows for seamless, continuous knitting. The pattern begins with a ribbed brim that provides elasticity and a secure fit around the head. The body of the hat features an all-over two-color slip stitch pattern that creates visual interest while building extra warmth through its double-layer construction. Crown decreases are strategically worked within the slip stitch pattern itself, maintaining the design's integrity as the hat is shaped to its finished point.
Stitches Used
- Ribbed brim: Provides stretch and a finished edge
- Two-color slip stitch pattern: Creates a double-layer fabric for enhanced warmth and textural depth
- Crown decreases: Integrated into the slip stitch pattern for seamless shaping
Materials and Yarn Recommendations
The Coaxial Hat works well with most wool or wool-blend yarns in worsted weight, offering flexibility in fiber selection. The pattern encourages creative yarn combinations to achieve desired color effects. Options include pairing an indie-dyed vibrant yarn against a dark commercial yarn for striking contrast, or combining two small skeins of hand-spun yarn for a unique, personalized look. This versatility allows knitters to customize the hat to their preferences while maintaining the design's intended warmth and structure.
Pattern Format and Skill Requirements
The Coaxial Hat is presented in both written instructions and charted format, accommodating different learning preferences. This intermediate-level project requires comfort with knitting in the round, understanding gauge, and the ability to work slip stitch patterns across multiple colors. The pattern does not specify a particular method for knitting in the round, allowing knitters to choose their preferred technique, whether using double-pointed needles, circular needles, or other methods.
Gauge and Needles
The pattern specifies a gauge of 26 stitches and 64 rounds over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in the slip stitch pattern. Proper gauge is essential for achieving the intended fit and drape of the hat, particularly given the design's emphasis on extra ease and slouch.
