Product Description
A hexagon motif, designed for a small blanket for my new cat (yes, I am that soft!). I designed it in fingering weight yarn using a 3mm hook, which came out at 14cm across. Then made a small afghan in bulky yarn with a 6mm hook, each motif was 25 cm across, and 7 motifs was all I needed for it! But it can be made in any yarn weight provided you use a suitable hook. I made it all in one colour but you could use different colours for each round. The pattern is charted, with symbols in English and US terms, and is now also written in English and US terms. And suggested hook sizes for alternative weight yarns.
Cluster Hexagon Motif by Agrarian Artisan
What Is Being Made
The Cluster Hexagon Motif is a crochet design created by Agrarian Artisan that produces a geometric hexagonal shape suitable for use as a standalone decorative element or as part of a larger project. When blocked, this motif measures 14 cm across, making it a substantial and versatile component for various crochet applications.
Craft and Technique Overview
This is a crochet project designed at an intermediate skill level. The motif employs cluster stitches as its primary structural element, which are decorative increases that create texture and visual interest. The design can be worked in a single colour throughout, or crafters may choose to introduce different colours for each round to create a more dynamic, multi-coloured effect.
Stitches Used
The Cluster Hexagon Motif incorporates the following crochet stitches:
- Chain (ch) – the foundational stitch used to create the base and spacing
- Double crochet (dc) – UK terminology; equivalent to single crochet (sc) in US terminology
- Slip stitch (ss) – used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions
- Half treble (htr) – UK terminology; equivalent to half double crochet (hdc) in US terminology
- Treble (tr) – UK terminology; equivalent to double crochet (dc) in US terminology
- Double treble (dtr) – UK terminology; equivalent to treble (tr) in US terminology
- 2 treble cluster (2tr cl) – UK terminology; equivalent to 2 double crochet cluster (2dc cl) in US terminology
- 3 treble cluster (3tr cl) – UK terminology; equivalent to 3 double crochet cluster (3dc cl) in US terminology
Cluster stitches are the signature element of this motif, creating raised, textured sections that define the hexagonal pattern.
Materials and Tools
The Cluster Hexagon Motif was designed in 4 ply yarn, also known as sock weight or fingering weight yarn. A 3mm crochet hook (US D/3) was used to achieve the intended finished size. However, the pattern is adaptable to any yarn weight, provided that an appropriately sized hook is selected to maintain proper tension and fabric structure. The instructions include both a chart for visual reference and written instructions for those who prefer text-based guidance.
Pattern Format and Instructions
This downloadable PDF pattern from Agrarian Artisan includes comprehensive instructions with both charted and written formats. The chart appears on page 2, while detailed written instructions are provided on page 3. A stitch symbol key is included to clarify the differences between UK and US crochet terminology, ensuring clarity for international crocheters. The pattern is designed for non-commercial use.
