Cloudscape Reversible Triangular Shawl by Meg Gadsbey

What Is Being Made

Cloudscape is a reversible triangular shawl designed by Meg Gadsbey. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a sophisticated wrap suitable for various occasions. The shawl is worked in two size options—Small and Large—with finished measurements of 53 inches (135 cm) wingspan and 25 inches (63.5 cm) depth for the Small version, or 69 inches (175 cm) wingspan and 36.5 inches (93 cm) depth for the Large version.

Construction Technique

Cloudscape is constructed using a side-to-side working method, meaning the shawl is knitted from one side edge to the opposite side edge rather than from the top down or bottom up. This technique allows for seamless integration of the design elements and creates the reversible quality of the finished piece. The shawl features i-cord edges, which are decorative and functional borders that frame the triangular shape and provide a polished finish to the garment.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The fabric structure of Cloudscape relies on a simple yet effective alternating pattern of stocking stitch and reverse stocking stitch sections. Stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch) creates a smooth, flat surface with a characteristic V-pattern on the right side, while reverse stocking stitch displays the bumpy texture on the right side. By alternating these two complementary stitch patterns throughout the shawl, the designer creates visual interest and textural contrast while maintaining the reversible quality—either side can be worn as the public-facing surface.

Yarn and Materials

Cloudscape is designed to be knitted with two yarns held together simultaneously throughout the entire project. The pattern calls for 437 yards (400 metres) of fingering/4 ply yarn combined with 437 yards (400 metres) of lace/2 ply yarn for the Small size, or 765 yards (700 metres) of each yarn type for the Large size. This two-yarn combination creates a unique fabric with both softness and loft.

The original sample shown in the pattern was knitted using Atelier Summit Fingering, a yarn composed of 70% Superwash Merino Wool and 30% Silk, held together with a lofty kid mohair silk lace yarn. The merino silk fingering weight provides durability and a luxurious feel, while the kid mohair silk lace yarn adds volume and a delicate, airy quality to the finished fabric.

For knitters seeking alternative yarn options, the pattern notes that the two-yarn combination can be substituted with a single strand of light worsted, DK, or 8 ply yarn in the same yardage requirements. This flexibility allows crafters to work with different yarn weights while maintaining the intended finished dimensions and fabric characteristics. The shawl should be blocked after completion to achieve the finished measurements listed in the pattern.
