What is Being Made

Cloud Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of socks designed by TeoMakes. This beginner-friendly project creates comfortable, everyday socks available in two sizes: S/M and M/L. The design features a classic construction with a ribbed cuff and a heel worked using advanced shaping techniques, making it an excellent introduction to sock knitting for those new to the craft.

Techniques Used

The Cloud Socks pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques. The cuff is constructed using in-the-round knitting on circular needles, which creates a seamless, tubular fabric. The most distinctive technique featured in this pattern is the German Short Row heel, a method that creates a shaped heel without requiring traditional heel flap and gusset construction. This technique involves strategic yarn manipulation and double stitches to gradually increase and decrease stitches, resulting in a smooth, contoured heel that fits snugly around the foot. Working the heel is done in the flat (back and forth) rather than in the round, which is a common approach in sock construction.

Stitches Used

Cloud Socks utilizes a limited palette of essential knitting stitches, making it accessible for beginners:

Materials and Gauge

Cloud Socks is worked in fingering weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category that creates a durable, fitted sock fabric. The pattern requires 50 grams of main color (MC) yarn and 25 grams of contrast color (CC) yarn, allowing for creative colorwork possibilities. The project is worked on 2mm circular needles, which are sized appropriately for fingering weight yarn and the tight gauge required for socks. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and scissors for finishing.

The specified gauge is 24 stitches and 32 rows over 10 centimeters (10x10cm) in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper sock fit, as this tension ensures the finished socks will be the appropriate size and have the correct elasticity for comfortable wear.

Pattern Structure

The Cloud Socks pattern is organized into distinct sections. Part 1 - Cuff begins with casting on 56 stitches for size S/M or 60 stitches for size M/L. The cuff is worked in the round using a knit 2, purl 2 ribbed pattern (*k2,p2*), which creates an elastic, textured edge that holds the socks securely on the leg. This ribbed section continues for 5 centimeters. Part 2 - Heel introduces the German Short Row technique, worked in the flat on 28 or 30 stitches (half the total cast-on stitches).
