Product Description
Cloud Gazing is a lightweight and airy crescent-shaped shawl. You work it from the top down with one skein of fingering-weight yarn.
The all-over chevron lace is relaxing to knit, and you’ll have it memorised after a few repeats. The lace is worked on the right side only, and there’s no purling.
You can easily customise the size to your liking by working as many pattern repeats as you want. Simply keep knitting until you use up all your yarn or reach your desired size.
This pattern has both written and charted instructions.
Yarn: Approximately 375 m / 410 yds of fingering-weight yarn.
Show with Eden Cottage Yarns Keld Twist (83% merino, 17% linen; 375 m / 410 yds per 100 g).
Cloud Gazing Crescent Shawl by Janina Kallio
What Is Being Made
Cloud Gazing is a lightweight and airy crescent-shaped shawl designed by Janina Kallio. This top-down knit project uses a single skein of fingering weight yarn, making it an accessible and portable knitting project. The shawl's crescent shape is achieved through strategic increases worked on both edges as you progress from the cast-on edge downward. The finished piece is customizable in size, allowing knitters to adjust the dimensions based on yarn availability and personal preference.
Techniques Used
Cloud Gazing employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner-level knitters. The pattern begins with a garter tab cast-on, a method that creates a neat, finished edge at the top of the shawl. Increases are worked consistently on both edges throughout the project to shape the crescent silhouette. The design is worked primarily on the right side, eliminating the need for purl rows and simplifying the overall construction. This approach makes the pattern relaxing and meditative to knit, with the lace pattern becoming intuitive after a few repeats.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern featured in Cloud Gazing is an all-over chevron lace. This lace motif creates the visual interest and lightweight, airy quality of the finished shawl. The chevron pattern is worked on right-side rows only, with no purling required, which streamlines the knitting process and reduces complexity. The repetitive nature of the chevron lace means that once you've worked through the pattern a few times, the sequence becomes memorized, allowing for a smooth, enjoyable knitting experience.
Materials
- Yarn: One skein of fingering weight yarn (also referred to as 4-ply weight)
- Needles: Appropriate needles for fingering weight yarn (specific needle size should be referenced in the complete pattern)
Pattern Notes
Knitters who tend to work with tight tension should consider working the edge increases loosely to maintain the intended drape and shape of the crescent shawl. The finished piece may initially appear smaller or different than expected, but this is normal for lace shawls. The customizable nature of Cloud Gazing means you can continue working pattern repeats until you've used all available yarn or reached your desired finished size, making it a flexible project for various yarn quantities.
