Product Description

Claire's Lace is a long, triangular wrap, shawlette, or scarf worked side-to-side for the body. Then, the laciest parts are worked back and forth across the length of the wrap.

The body of the wrap begins with a small number of stitches and then gradually increases. After the widest point is reached, the number of stitches gradually decrease until a very long triangle is achieved.

Claire's Lace is 106 in.(269cm) by 11 in. (27.9cm) at the widest point. Stitches used: chain, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, triple (treble) crochet, slip stitch.

A textured puff stitch is also included in the design.

One hank of Tosh Lace will complete the wrap.

Claire's Lace Crochet Scarf and Shawl Pattern

Project Overview

Claire's Lace is an intermediate-level crochet pattern designed by Julie Blagojevich that creates elegant scarves and shawls perfect for adding delicate texture to any wardrobe. This downloadable PDF pattern features sophisticated lace-weight construction, resulting in an airy, refined finished piece ideal for layering or draping.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a versatile accessory that functions as both a scarf and shawl. The finished dimensions measure 106 inches in length by 11 inches at the widest point (269 cm by 27.9 cm), making it long enough to wrap, tie, or wear as a flowing shawl with generous drape and movement.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for Madelinetosh Tosh Lace, a lace-weight yarn composed of 100% superwash merino wool. One hank provides 950 yards (868 meters), offering ample yardage for the full project. The recommended color is Filigree, which complements the delicate lace construction. A size 7 (4.5 mm) crochet hook is required to work the pattern, along with a darning needle for weaving in ends.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches combined with specialized techniques to create visual interest and texture:

  • Basic Stitches: The pattern utilizes chain stitch (ch), single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), triple or treble crochet (tr), and slip stitch (sl st) as foundational elements throughout the design.
  • Puff Stitch Technique: The pattern features a signature 5-dc puff stitch, created by working five double crochet stitches into the same stitch location, then drawing yarn through all loops on the hook simultaneously. This technique creates dimensional, textured bumps that add visual depth.
  • Modified Puff Stitch: A variation used within the pattern begins with a chain-3 foundation, followed by four yarn-over-and-draw sequences worked into the same stitch, then completed by drawing yarn through all remaining loops. This modified approach provides subtle variation in texture and puff size.
  • Stitch Spaces: The pattern incorporates stitch spaces (sp), which are open areas created between stitches to enhance the lace effect and promote the airy quality characteristic of lace-weight projects.

Pattern Characteristics

The combination of puff stitches with traditional crochet stitches creates an intricate lace fabric that showcases the delicate nature of the superwash merino yarn. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that crocheters should be comfortable with standard stitches and able to follow stitch abbreviations and pattern instructions, though the techniques used remain accessible to those with foundational crochet knowledge.

Finishing and Construction

The pattern includes a notions list specifying a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends, a standard finishing step for crochet projects. The downloadable PDF format provides detailed abbreviations and special stitch definitions, ensuring crocheters have all necessary information to complete Claire's Lace successfully.
