Product Description
This crochet pattern is for an oversized men’s sweater, with a textured stitch design It is made with chunky yarn and a 10mm crochet hook, so it works up fast. The finished tension is soft and very comfortable to wear.
The garment is made as sperate front and back, sewn together, and then collar and sleeves added directly to the body. As it is an oversized sweater, there is minimal shaping in the body. Sleeves taper to a nice fit around the wrist.
There is a photographic guide on the textured stitch and any special construction. The textured stitch is a Third Loop HDC, or 3Lhdc
There is a lot of stretch in the finished item, so the sizing is only approximate. I have listed this pattern as “intermediate” because of pattern techniques.
Sizes are flexible, but as this is an oversized sweater the sizes are for the garment size, not the body size

What is Being Made
This is a chunky oversize crochet sweater designed for a relaxed, comfortable fit. The pattern offers multiple size options with chest measurements ranging from 122 cm (48 in) to 144 cm (56 in), and corresponding lengths from 75 cm (29 in) down to 69 cm (27 in). The oversized silhouette makes this sweater suitable for layering and casual wear.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using the crochet technique, classified as an intermediate difficulty level. The pattern is specifically designed for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to work with structured garment construction. The use of stitch counts to achieve precise sizing means that matching tension is critical to the success of the finished garment.
Stitches Used
The sweater primarily features the following crochet stitches:
- Half Double Crochet (hdc) – the main stitch used throughout the body of the sweater for its medium height and dense fabric
- Chain (ch) – used for foundation chains and turning chains
- Half Double Crochet Two Together (hdc2tog) – used for decreasing stitches to shape the garment
- Slip Stitch (sl st) – used for joining rounds and finishing edges
- Single Crochet (sc) – included in the abbreviation guide for potential edging or detail work
The pattern uses ch 1 and ch 2 turns that do not count as stitches, which is important for maintaining accurate stitch counts during construction.
Materials and Equipment
Yarn: The sweater is worked in Hayfield Bonus Chunky yarn. The yardage required varies by size, with the pattern specifying 9 balls of 100g (approximately 137 meters or 150 yards per ball). This chunky weight yarn creates a quick-working, substantial fabric with excellent drape and warmth.
Equipment: A 10mm crochet hook is used to work with the chunky yarn. Additional tools include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and a large eye needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming pieces together if needed.
Tension and Sizing
The pattern specifies a tension of 8 hdc x 7 rows = 10cm x 10cm (using US crochet terms). Achieving this tension is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements. Crocheters are advised to adjust hook size up or down if necessary to match this tension, as the pattern relies on stitch counts rather than measurements alone to ensure proper fit across all size options.
