Product Description
An economical and easy knit, this triangular shawl makes good use of 2 adoringly contrasting hanks of fingering weight yarn - or … 1 hank of fingering and 1 hank of lace weight mohair. I actually used 1 hank of fingering purchased from an independent dyer and just over 2 balls (around 320 m) of DROPS Brushed Alpaca Silk. Using a mohair or the Alpaca Silk option as your contrast will give you a lighter result. Super soft and snug around the neck!
This item starts small and ends when the desired number of stitches have been reached which makes it easily adaptable size wise. Also relatively quick to knit once you get into the rhythm of it. A great travel project! And a lovely gift knit.
The stitches used are mainly garter and eyelet based. An I Cord edge is knit along one side, simply worked by following the directions as written, and increases are worked on every alternate row, on the opposite side. There is no decreasing. An I Cord bind off is used and simply explained.
Chrysten Shawl by Good to Go Knits Designs
What is Being Made
The Chrysten Shawl is a knitted triangular shawl designed by Good to Go Knits Designs. Named after Christy and Trysten from the YouTube podcast The Girls in the Yarn Cafe, this shawl celebrates a meaningful connection made at Vogue Knitting Live, San Francisco 2018. The design incorporates hand-dyed yarn, making it a personal and artistic piece that combines both the designer's vision and artisan yarn craftsmanship.
Finished Measurements
The Chrysten Shawl is designed to drape beautifully with generous dimensions when unblocked:
- Top Edge: 145 cm (58 inches)
- I-Cord Edge: 100 cm (40 inches)
- I-Cord Bind-off Edge: 94 cm (38 inches)
Knitting Techniques
This shawl employs classic triangular shawl construction techniques. The design features an I-Cord bind-off edge, a refined finishing technique that creates a professional, polished edge. The I-Cord finish is a hallmark of quality shawl design, providing both structural integrity and visual elegance to the perimeter of the garment.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch pattern used throughout the Chrysten Shawl is Garter Stitch, one of the most fundamental and versatile knitting stitches. Garter Stitch is created by knitting every row, producing a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges. This stitch is ideal for shawls as it creates beautiful drape while remaining beginner-friendly and forgiving of tension variations.
Gauge and Tension
The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches to 26 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in Garter Stitch using 4mm (USA 6) needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished measurements and drape of the shawl.
Materials and Tools
The Chrysten Shawl is designed to work with 3-ply and 4-ply weight yarns, offering flexibility in yarn selection. The pattern calls for 4mm (USA 6) circular needles that are long enough to accommodate the increasing number of stitches as the triangular shawl grows. Circular needles are preferred for shawl knitting as they provide adequate needle length and distribute the weight of the project comfortably during extended knitting sessions.
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner-level project, the Chrysten Shawl is accessible to knitters new to shawl construction. The straightforward Garter Stitch pattern and clear structure make this an excellent introduction to triangular shawl design, while the finished piece delivers sophisticated results suitable for gifting or personal wear.
Format
The Chrysten Shawl pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, allowing immediate access to the complete instructions for printing or digital reference while knitting.
