This is a charming knitted toy project designed by Needles & Pins that combines festive decoration with functional gift-giving. The pattern creates a knitted poinsettia flower that serves as a decorative cover for a Chocolate Orange, making it an ideal handmade Christmas present. The design cleverly conceals a 10cm Chocolate Orange gift within the flower structure, blending craft with seasonal gifting.
The project consists of a knitted poinsettia flower with a hidden compartment designed to hold a Chocolate Orange. Poinsettias are traditional Christmas plants known for their brightly coloured bracts, and this knitted interpretation captures their festive appeal while adding a practical gift-holding element. The finished piece functions as both a decorative ornament and a creative packaging solution.
This is a knitting project classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic skills. The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques combined with shaping methods to create the three-dimensional flower form.
The pattern calls for DK weight yarn in two primary colours: green and red. Only small amounts of each colour are needed, making this an excellent project for using up yarn scraps. The Chocolate Orange cover specifically uses double strands of DK yarn for added structure and durability. Additional materials include a length of lime green yarn or embroidery thread for details, and pins for securing petals into position before stitching them permanently in place.
Knitters will need two pairs of knitting needles: 5mm and 4mm sizes. The 5mm needles are used for the initial cast-on and main structure, while the 4mm needles provide a smaller gauge for more detailed sections. Pins are essential for the assembly process, allowing the crafter to position the poinsettia petals correctly before final stitching.
The pattern specifies DK (double knitting) weight yarn, which is a medium weight that works well for creating defined stitch definition while remaining manageable for intermediate knitters. The use of double strands for the cover increases fabric density and structure, ensuring the piece can safely contain the Chocolate Orange without stretching or distorting.

Will make for special friends quite a lot of work.
This pattern is just gorgeous, I've knitted three as stocking fillers. Only one problem, I keep eating the chocolate oranges, I might just put real oranges inside that'll stop me.
