Product Description
The pdf pattern gives you full instructions and plenty of stage by stage photographs to make 7 Christmas tree ornaments. They include: Santa, Reindeer, Snowman, Angel, Stocking, Bauble and Star They are knit flat using straight needles and 4 ply yarn. You could also use double knit yarn, they would just be a little bigger. The angel wings, halo, snowman arms and reindeer antlers are made from an i-cord, which is knit on two double pointed needles. There is a photo tutorial showing you how to do this at the end of the pattern - and don't worry - it is said that the "i" in i - cord stands for idiot - so if you can knit, you can make an i-cord !! Each ornament can be knit from just 5 or 6 grams of yarn.
Christmas Ornaments by Julie Taylor
What is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern provides instructions for creating seven festive tree ornaments perfect for holiday decorating. The collection includes a stocking, angel, star, snowman, Santa, reindeer, and bauble, each designed as a small decorative piece suitable for hanging on a Christmas tree.
Pattern Overview and Design Details
All seven ornaments in this collection are worked flat on two needles and then seamed together, making them accessible for knitters comfortable with basic construction techniques. The snowman, used as a sizing reference, measures approximately 9cm (3½") in height when worked in 4 ply yarn. Each ornament is designed to be stuffed with toy filling, creating a three-dimensional decorative object.
Techniques Used
The ornaments employ fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. Key techniques include:
- Flat knitting on two needles
- Seaming pieces together to create three-dimensional forms
- I-cord construction for specific ornament details (used on the angel and reindeer)
- Stuffing and finishing techniques to complete the ornaments
Stitches Used
While specific stitch details are not enumerated in the pattern overview, the intermediate difficulty level suggests the use of standard knitting stitches appropriate for creating small, shaped pieces. The flat construction method allows for straightforward stitch work without the complexity of circular knitting techniques.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern is designed using Rowan Pure Wool 4 Ply yarn, though any 4 ply (fingering weight) yarn will produce satisfactory results. The yarn weight is a critical specification for achieving the intended ornament size and appearance.
For crafters preferring larger ornaments, the pattern accommodates substitution with double knit yarn. When using double knit yarn instead of 4 ply, ornaments will measure approximately 10.5cm (4") or larger—for example, the snowman reference ornament grows to just over 10.5cm (4") in height. Knitters choosing to work with double knit yarn should note that additional yarn will be required and needles should be selected two sizes smaller than the yarn band recommends.
Tools and Supplies Required
- 2.75mm (US size 2) needles for main ornament construction
- 2.75mm (US size 2) double pointed needles for i-cord details on the angel and reindeer ornaments
- Toy stuffing (approximately 6g total for the collection)
Skill Level and Tension Considerations
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle simple shaping and seaming. An important note for crafters: tension is not critical for these ornaments, which makes them forgiving projects that focus more on construction technique than precise gauge matching.
