The finished shawl measures approximately 230 cm (90.55 inches) by 55 cm (21 inches), making it a generous wrap suitable for layering and warmth.

Construction and Shaping

The shawl is worked from the top down using short rows to create its distinctive gentle curve and crescent shape. This construction method allows for straightforward customization—knitters can adjust the number of cast-on stitches to modify the final dimensions or to work with specific yarn quantities available. The pattern demonstrates flexibility in design, with the featured version incorporating 18 motifs and requiring 880 meters (962 yards) of yarn.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

Choupal employs a two-part knitting strategy that balances mindless and mindful work. The shawl begins with a stockinette stitch section that allows knitters to work on autopilot, providing a meditative rhythm for relaxation. As the pattern progresses, lace stitches are introduced, requiring full attention and focus from the knitter.

The border features variations of the lace stitch pattern called Create, originally designed by Naomi Parkhurst. These lace motifs form the decorative edge and primary visual interest of the finished shawl, transforming the piece from a simple wrap into a textured, sophisticated accessory.

Materials and Yarn

Choupal is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, with the sample project worked in soft merino yarn. The yardage requirement is approximately 880 to 962 yards, though this can be adjusted based on the number of motifs and cast-on stitches chosen. The merino fiber provides warmth and a luxurious feel against the skin, complementing the lace detailing with subtle sheen and drape.
