Product Description
The Chimera Triangular Scarf (shawl) was designed for the 4th Annual Scarf of the Month Club. Made using only one cake of Lion Brand Mandala, it's a great project to sit and crochet while binge watching your favorite show.
Yarn Notes: Lion Brand Mandala in Chimera was used for the sample in the photos. Another similar DK weight / 3 yarn may be substituted, as long as gauge can be met.
Yardage: Use only 1 cake (590 yards) of Lion Brand Mandala yarn for a scarf or 2 cakes (1,180) for an adult size shawl.
All of my patterns are written in standard american terms, unless noted otherwise.

Chimera Triangular Scarf & Shawl by Jennifer Renaud
What Is Being Made
The Chimera Triangular Scarf is a versatile crochet project designed by Jennifer Renaud that can be created as either a scarf or a larger shawl. The triangular construction creates a dynamic, asymmetrical silhouette. The scarf version measures 50 inches wide by 23.5 inches at the center point, making it an ideal accessory for layering and styling. By adjusting yardage, crafters can expand this design into a full shawl.
Techniques Used
This project employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The construction relies on working rows with turning chains and building stitch patterns systematically. The pattern utilizes cluster stitches to create texture and visual interest within the triangular shape. Crafters will practice maintaining consistent tension and understanding how to work the first stitch of every row into the same stitch as the turning chain, a key technique for achieving even edges.
Stitches Used
- Single Crochet (sc): The foundation stitch used throughout, providing structure and density to the fabric
- Chain (ch): Used for creating foundation chains and turning chains between rows
- Double Crochet (dc): Employed to add height and create lighter, more open sections
- Double Crochet Cluster (2 dc-cl): A decorative stitch combination that adds textural depth and visual dimension
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Used as the turning chain to transition between rows
Materials & Yarn Information
This project is worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn that creates a drape suitable for scarves and shawls. The recommended yarn is Lion Brand Yarn Mandala in Chimera, a 100% acrylic fiber available in 590-yard skeins (540 meters / 150 grams / 5.3 ounces per cake). For the scarf version, one cake of yarn is needed. To create the larger shawl version, two cakes are required, allowing crafters to expand the project to approximately 1,180 yards total.
The pattern accommodates yarn substitution, noting that similar fibers and weights to Lion Brand Mandala will work effectively. A 6.00 mm crochet hook is the recommended size, though adjustments may be necessary based on individual crochet tension. Those who crochet on the looser side may need to go down one or two hook sizes to achieve the correct gauge.
Gauge & Sizing
The pattern provides gauge information for reference: 11 stitches and 5 rows in single crochet equal 3 inches by 1.25 inches (unblocked). The instructions note that gauge is not crucial for this project, making it forgiving for beginners. Dimensions are included within the pattern instructions to allow crafters to check their progress and adjust as needed. The triangular construction naturally accommodates slight variations in tension and sizing.
Difficulty Level
Rated as beginner-friendly, this project is accessible to those new to crochet while remaining engaging for more experienced crafters. The straightforward stitch combinations and clear structure make it an excellent choice for building foundational skills in crochet construction and shaping.
