Product Description
This is my Childrens Simple Rainbow Socks (Circular) knitting pattern. I have spent over 2 years developing this pattern so that they are very easy to make and turn out PERFECT every time. This makes sock knitting FUN! The knitting pattern provides full instructions for children aged 4-12 with 4 childrens foot length sizes: XS (4.5-5.5 inches), S (5.5-6.5 inches), M (6.5-7.5 inches) and L (7.5-8.5 inches) and there are numerous photos to help you throughout. They are made in any 4ply sock yarn of your choice on 2 mm double pointed needles. Even the largest size takes only 50g of 4ply wool. The heels are worked in short rows without having to wrap and turn, meaning you can easily whip up a pair while watching tv.

This is a downloadable knitting pattern for children's circular knit socks featuring a vibrant rainbow color design. The pattern, created by madmonkeyknits (pattern number 1450), offers four graduated sizes ranging from extra small to large, accommodating children's shoe sizes from UK 3 through to UK 2 (USA 4-3, Euro 19-34). The socks are designed to be practical everyday wear with a playful, colorful aesthetic that appeals to children.

The pattern includes four size options:
- Size XS: Foot length 4.5-5.5 inches (11-14 cm), UK shoe size 3-6, USA 4-7, Euro 19-23
- Size S: Foot length 5.5-6.5 inches (14-16 cm), UK shoe size 6-9, USA 7-10, Euro 23-27

Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level pattern employs circular knitting techniques using double-pointed needles, a traditional method for creating seamless socks in the round. The primary stitch used throughout is stocking stitch (every round knit), which creates the smooth, classic fabric characteristic of quality sock construction. The pattern incorporates 1x1 ribbing (alternating knit and purl stitches) for the cuff, providing elasticity and a secure fit around the ankle. Additional techniques include decreasing stitches for shaping the heel and toe areas, slip stitches for joining, and make-one increases to shape the sock structure.
Tension and Gauge
The pattern specifies a tension of 36 stitches and 48 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches) in stocking stitch when worked on 2.00 mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for ensuring the finished socks fit properly and have the intended elasticity and durability.
Materials Required
The pattern calls for West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4 ply yarn or any comparable 4 ply sock yarn. The yardage is economical across all sizes, requiring only one 100 gram ball each of white or black for the base color, plus one 100 gram ball each of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple for the rainbow stripes. Even the largest size uses only 50 grams of yarn in total. Needles required are five 2.00 mm short double-pointed knitting needles (DPNs), which are the standard tool for circular sock knitting.
Pattern Details and Abbreviations
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including K (knit), P (purl), ST (stitch), ST.ST (stocking stitch), DEC (decrease), TOG (together), SL (slip), and M1 (make one). Understanding these abbreviations is essential for following the pattern instructions accurately. The use of double-pointed needles allows the knitter to work continuously in the round, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a professional, seamless finish typical of quality handmade socks.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques such as casting on, knitting in the round, and simple decreases, but may be challenging for absolute beginners. The circular knitting method and color work require attention to detail and familiarity with managing multiple needles simultaneously.
