CHICKEN STACK
Whether as doorstop or decoration for shelf or table, this colorful chicken stack always looks great.
The doorstop variant has a useful handle which makes one handed handling a lot easier. For the smaller decorative variant the handle is simply left out. No sewing! The chicken stack is done as one piece.
You can use any yarn you like.

What Is Being Made
The Chicken Stack Doorstop is a decorative crochet project designed to function as a functional home accessory. This pattern creates a stacked chicken figure that serves as a doorstop, combining practical utility with whimsical craft appeal. The design allows for customization in size based on yarn weight selection, making it adaptable to different spaces and preferences.
Craft and Skill Level
This is an intermediate-level crochet project suitable for crafters with foundational crochet knowledge who are ready to tackle more complex shaping and construction techniques. The pattern includes step-by-step instructions with visual guidance across multiple pages to support successful completion.
Crochet Techniques Used
- Magic ring – recommended technique for starting circular sections cleanly
- Chain stitches – foundational stitch for creating base structures
- Single crochet – basic stitch used throughout the pattern
- Half double crochet – medium-height stitch for shaping
- Double crochet – taller stitch for varied texture and structure
- Triple crochet – advanced stitch for specific design elements
- Slip stitch – joining technique for seamless connections
- Front loop crocheting – selective loop work for textural effects
- Back loop crocheting – alternative loop technique for dimensional details
- Surface crocheting – embellishment method for adding details to finished surfaces
Materials and Yarn Options
The pattern provides flexibility with two primary yarn weight options. For the larger doorstop version, use DK weight yarn (such as Puppets Lyric 8/8) or alternatively two strands of Sport weight yarn (such as Catania Originals) paired with a 3.0 mm crochet hook. For the smaller version, use Sport weight yarn with a 2.0 mm hook. The pattern notes that lighter yarn will produce a smaller finished figure, while heavier yarn will create a taller version, allowing crafters to customize dimensions to suit their needs.
Pattern Format and Resources
This downloadable PDF pattern includes comprehensive instructions with options for multiple languages. Crafters can print only the pattern instruction pages (pages 4-29) if they prefer to work without the English US crochet term translations, streamlining their reference materials during the project.
