Chick Face Accessory Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Chick Face Accessory is a small crocheted amigurumi-style chick face designed by Katherine Sloggett. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a charming decorative piece that can be worn as a keychain or kept as a soft toy. The finished face measures approximately 7cm in diameter after round 7, making it a compact and portable accessory perfect for spring-themed crafting.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental amigurumi construction techniques suitable for intermediate crocheters. The design begins with a magic loop, a foundational technique that allows crafters to start working in the round without a traditional chain base. The piece is worked in continuous rounds using strategic increases to create the circular face shape.
The pattern demonstrates progressive shaping through increase placement, where double crochet stitches are strategically doubled in specific intervals across each round. This controlled increase method creates an even, spherical form. The crafter works two separate circles—one for the front and one for the back of the face—which are later assembled and stuffed to create dimension.
Crochet Stitches Used
The primary stitch throughout this pattern is the double crochet (dc), worked using UK terminology. The pattern begins with 6 double crochets into the magic loop and progresses through seven rounds of structured increases:
- Round 1: 6 double crochets
- Round 2: 12 double crochets (2 dc in each stitch)
- Round 3: 18 double crochets (1 dc, 2 dc repeat pattern)
- Round 4: 24 double crochets (2 dc, 2 dc repeat pattern)
- Round 5: 30 double crochets (3 dc, 2 dc repeat pattern)
- Round 6: 36 double crochets (4 dc, 2 dc repeat pattern)
- Round 7: 36 double crochets (1 dc in each stitch, no increases)
The pattern also incorporates chain stitches for the initial foundation and joining techniques for attaching additional components like wings and hair to the completed face.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern is designed for 3.0mm crochet hook and calls for 10g of Scheepjes Catona yarn in Primrose, a 4-ply weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition for small amigurumi projects. The 4-ply weight creates tight, even stitches ideal for maintaining the chick's facial features.
Essential embellishments include 12mm black safety eyes for the chick's gaze, orange or yellow felt for crafting a small beak, and soft toy stuffing to fill the completed face pieces before assembly. An optional keychain attachment allows the finished accessory to be worn or displayed. Additional embellishments for wings and hair are referenced in the pattern instructions, though specific materials are not detailed in the provided content.
Difficulty Level and Tension
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are comfortable working in the round and managing increases. The pattern specifies tension guidance: after completing round 7, the crocheted circle should measure approximately 7cm in diameter, helping crafters verify their work is progressing correctly.
